Join the NMC and our panel of Rearranging Learning Spaces thought leaders onWednesday, September 3 at 8am PT / 10am CT/ 11am ET (check for local time). This one-hour session was held in the Google+ On Air platform and broadcasted live on YouTube. Participation is free for all attendees.

There is a focused movement to reinvent traditional learning spaces and rearrange the entire educational experience — a trend that is largely being driven by the influence of innovative learning approaches. Century-old practices in which students learn subject-by-subject, while uniformly facing the front of the classroom, are perceived by many as an antiquated approach to teaching and learning. The multidisciplinary nature of project-based learning, co-creation, and other contemporary approaches has brought attention to innovative designs of learning environments.

Meet the Panel

Panel Moderator: Holly Ludgate, Senior Director of Program Development, NMC

Dr. Holly Ludgate has been working in the fields of education, instructional design, technology, and online learning for the past 13 years. This passion for blending education with cutting-edge technology led her to pursue a doctoral degree from Pepperdine University in Educational Technology, where her research focused on gaming immersion in educational settings and fostering 21st century skills through Quest Atlantis. In 2007, Dr. Ludgate became Program Director at Full Sail University, where she launched the online Education Media Design and Technology Master’s degree program. Currently, she is the Senior Director for Program Development of the New Media Consortium (NMC), an international not-for-profit focused on sparking innovation and creativity in learning, where she manages the NMC Academy — the organization’s online learning initiative.

Stephanie Barbuto, Social Studies Teacher at String Theory High Schoool

Stephanie Barbuto is the social studies teacher at String Theory High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her school is one of a handful of schools in the nation recognized by Apple as an Apple Distinguished School and she actively incorporates technology and innovative projects into her classroom. An Ocean City, New Jersey native, Stephanie loves to go to the beach in the summer and spend time with friends and family. She also loves to travel and has visited close to 20 countries and spent six months living in Florence, Italy.

Lambert Heller, Head of the Open Science Lab at TIB Hannover, Germany

Being a social scientist by education, Lambert received a postgraduate Masters in Library and Information Science from Humboldt University Berlin in 2007. Since then, he introduced new methods and practices to academic librarians in Germany, e.g. library unconferences (“BibCamp”) and, more recently, a collaborative writing project on information literacy (book sprint “CoScience”). He publishes, teaches and blogs about collaborative tagging and reference management, Wikipedia and information literacy, “living books” and academic publishing, and other topics. He’s one of the co-principal investigators of the NMC Horizon Report > 2014 Library Edition.

Rudolf Mumenthaler, Professor of library science at the University of Applied Sciences (HTW) Chur in Switzerland

Since 2012 Rudolf has been professor of library science at the University of Applied Sciences (HTW) Chur in Switzerland. Before he worked as head of Special Collections (1997-2008) and as head of Innovation and Marketing (2009-2012) at ETH-Bibliothek Zurich. His interests include digital libraries, e-books, innovation and innovation management, change management in libraries, social media (http://ruedimumenthaler.ch/about/).

Seema Rao, Director of Intergenerational Learning, Cleveland Museum of Art

Seema Rao is the Director of Intergenerational Learning and leads content creation for Gallery One. Her team plans and implements engaging studio experiences, Pre-K-12 gallery experiences, and teen programs at the Cleveland Museum of Art. With more than a decade of museum experience, Seema holds a Master’s degree in South Asian Studies from University of Wisconsin, Madison and a Master’s degree in Art History from Case Western Reserve University.

Lisa Stephens, Senior Strategist, Academic Innovation at SUNY

Lisa Stephens, Ph.D., serves as SUNY’s Senior Strategist for Academic Innovation from her home campus at the University at Buffalo. She is the program director for the Innovative Instruction Technology Grant (IITG) initiative designed to encourage system-wide research and innovation by leveraging technology in service of pedagogy, with a recent focus on Open SUNY.   She is the project lead for FLEXspace.org – a robust, open access, searchable database of innovative, built learning environments that when fully populated, will offer a peer review option.  Her research interests focus on the intersection of student, faculty and administrative understanding of online learning, emerging and collaborative technologies.

Annie Tuttle, Ph.D. –  Assistant Professor of Sociology – SUNY – Onondaga Community College

Annie Tuttle, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Onondaga Community College. Her passion for teaching led her to the community college setting, where the smaller class sizes affords her the ability to try new things in the classroom, including Challenged Based Learning and Flipped Classroom. Dr. Tuttle teaches both online and blended classes, as well as traditional face-to-face classes. She is the faculty advisor to Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, taking Challenged Based Learning out of the classroom. Her current research focuses on the experiences of gay and lesbians at work, specifically understanding the mechanisms of acceptance that gays and lesbians experience at work.
