What does BYOD look like across different learning environments? Why is BYOD important for teaching and learning? What are the challenges in implementing and managing BYOD initiatives? What does the future of BYOD look like?


The term BYOD, which stands for “Bring Your Own Device,” refers to the practice of people — be they students, faculty, staff, or patrons — bringing their own laptops, tablets, smartphones, or other mobile devices with them to the learning environment.

Meet the BYOD Panel

Panel Moderator:
Stace Carter, Instructor at the Digital Media Lab at the University of Virginia

Stace Carter has worked as a media producer and instructor at the University of Virginia since 2004 and currently directs production for the University’s Office of Online Learning, specializing in course design for Massive Open Online Courses. Carter brings over a decade’s worth of experience in commercial broadcast production to the application of digital narrative, and particularly documentary storytelling, in the academy. Areas of specialization include teaching digital storytelling and new media project development in a large-scale BYOD environment. Expertise includes design for the humanities, business, and interdisciplinary education. He co-authored the multimedia case study and documentary short film “Deepwater Horizon: After the Oil Spills” (Darden Business Publishing), an exploration of the stakeholder relationships and ethical considerations leaders face in crisis.

Troy Bagwell, Director of Technology, Decatur Independent School District

Bagwell began his career in 1991 as a Project Specialist with the Texas Center for Educational Technology at the University of North Texas. He then went on to be Technology Coordinator for the CREST Center for Professional Development and Technology at the University of Texas at Arlington before coming to Decatur ISD. He is currently a member of the North Texas Association of Technology Directors, Texas Computer Education Association, International Society for Technology in Education, Association for Supervison and Curriculum Development(ASCD), Texas ASCD, and Texas Association of School Administrators. He is a New Media Consortium K12 Ambassador and an Apple Distinguished Educator. Bagwell is currently a Board Member of the Decatur Public Library.

Jama Coartney, Head of the Digital Media Lab at the University of Virginia Library

Jama Coartney is Head of the Digital Media Lab at the University of Virginia serving some 23,000 students, faculty, and staff. She brings 20 years of management and professional technology experience, including consultation and project planning involving digital imaging, audiovisual production, physical interactivity, animation, mobile technologies, 3D imaging, and delivery of media content. She holds a B.A. in Communication and English from James Madison University and an M.S. in Management of Information Technology from the University of Virginia.

Robin Dowden, Director of New Media Initiatives at the Walker Art Center

Together with her department, Dowden is responsible for developing the Walker’s use of interactive and emerging technologies including the Walker’s websites, multimedia computer applications, mobile interpretive resources, and projects to create digital resources.

Maya Georgieva, Associate Director of the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning at New York University

Georgieva provides strategic leadership to advance academic initiatives that transform the teaching-learning environment. She has spearheaded the implementation of instructional design and technology, learning space design, blended learning, digital storytelling and faculty development. Her most recent work and projects focus on design thinking and the innovative use of mobile technology and game design to foster higher levels of student engagement.

Lisa Gustinelli, French Teacher at Saint Andrew’s School

Gustinelli is an NMC K-12 Ambassador, an online instructor for Middlebury Interactive Languages and a Latin and French teacher at Saint Andrew’s School in Boca Raton, Florida. She has immersed herself in the fostering of technology in education both online and in the brick and mortar classroom. Lisa has taken this passion one step further by creating a philanthropic organization called Madagascar in My Heart (http://mada.inmyheart.org/) in order to bring learning through technology to students living in abject poverty in developing nations. As a social entrepreneur she has successfully raised funds and started computer-learning labs in the remote regions of Toliara, Ft. Dauphin, and Sakahara, Madagascar. Her next project will take place in May of 2014 in South Africa.
