[edit] Snapshot View
del.icio.us is the top rung among social bookmarking tools, ones that allow you to manage your own web favorites. If all these tools did was free your bookmarks from your browser they would be worth using, but that is only a core service. They also allow organization via folksonomy tagging, and tap users into connecting with a larger pool of del.icio.us users -- either individually or collectively. In its deceptive (and effective) simplicity, it's not readily apparent how del.ico.us and other social bookmarking tools replicate the knowledge management and sharing benefits asscoiated with weblogging -- indeed, social bookmarking can be thought of as a stripped-down form of weblogging.
[edit] The 2.0 Factor
- tagging -- we'll leave aside fanciful discussions of folksonomies, but you know, these tags work surprisingly well
- publish tools to other sites - you see those "publish to del.icio.us" links everywhere, and its strong RSS support built-in javascript tools make it easy to publish to your own site. It can function effectively as a simple, easy-to-use way of introducing human filtering of content feeds. (Example here.)
- "wisdom of crowds", "collaborative knowledge gardening"
- 3rd party add-ons -- that open API means that other developers get to exploit del.icio.us' user base and database, but they add functionality to the site in the process...
