Web 2.0ing the NMC Summer Conference
Hello from Indianapolis! Here is one more 2007 NMC Summer Conference reminder to let you know of a few web related resources we are using this week, some of them just cooked up in the last few days.
If you share any conference photos on flickr, bookmark conference related resources in del.icio.us, or post any blog entries about the conference, please use our official conference tag of "nmc2007" - this allows us to see all of this content in a group. Presenters can upload powerpoints to slideshare and tag them there as well.
You can also see how this is pulled together as a "tumblog" (yet one more new web word) at http://nmc.tumblr.com/
Also- if you take any photos at the Friday night jam, please add the extra flickr tag of "nmcjam" so we can add to last year's photos (http://flickr.com/photos/tags/nmcjam )
Map Yourself at the Conference!
Many of you (thanks) have already responded to an invite we sent to use attendr. This tool allows you to plot your home location (city/state are fine), and provide some tags to describe yourself. When viewed at the URL above, you can see a great map of conference attendees. From the list on the right, you can use the icons to indicate whether you know another person or if you'd wish to meet them at the conference. When you click someone's name (or their map location), these connections show up as lines. If you click any of the tags at the bottom, it will highlight all attendees who use the same tag.

This site has that web 2.0 beta feel, but we like how it visually can show connections between people and interests.
Here is another tool that allows us to pull into one place conference information from many sources, including the tagged items above, RSS feeds from NMC web sites, and more. We have a second tab for information related to the Indianapolis area. PageFlakes is very powerful tool for creating single page dynamic resource or news sites. It's free!
Twitter is the latest social networking craze. Use the web, your phone to send brief (140 character) updates about "what you are doing". Do not be deceived by first impressions (mine was "that sounds really dumb", why would anybody bother or care?) -- it is a fascinating way to connect and share. If you want a passionate explanation, find Gardner Campbell at the conference and ask him. During the conference, you can use it to provide short snippets, like tiny blog posts, of relevant things you are hearing, or reactions to presentations-- that is shared with people who create contacts with you. Create a free account at http://twitter.com and then visit our NMC Twitter account (http://twitter.com/newmediac ) to "add" as a friend. We will be setting up some screens that use a cool application called TwitterCamp (create in Adobe Apollo) that can dynamically show what is being "twittered" by all the friends of newmediac -- see a screen shot http://www.flickr.com/photos/cogdog/525762320/
If you have questions about these tools, see me at the NMC booth during the opening reception (where we hope to also be demonstrating the voice capability of Second Life) or stop by our station at the poster session... or just track me down during the conference.
Looking forward to seeing you in a few days at NMC 2007.
