Wright in CAA’s Art Journal

Michael Wright (aka. Mrags Writer), Digital Media Professor at Otis College of Art and Design, is one of the pioneer artists mentioned in an article by new media art historian Patric D Prince in the spring 09 issue of the ”Art Journal” published by the College Art Association. The Prince article “Imaging by Numbers: A Historical View of Digital Printmaking in America” is one of three features dealing with early digital art making covered in the spring issue of the “Art Journal”. Wright is quoted and his late 90s image “I, Be, Am” is displayed.

Today Linden Lab, makers of the Second Life® virtual world platform, published a case study hailing the New Media Consortium’s NMC Campus project as the largest and most successful educational project in Second Life.    The project, a collaboration of nearly 150 colleges and universities, receives an average of 1500 visitors daily, from some 55 countries around the globe.

The case study provides an overview of the effort and will be part of a series detailing successful projects from the corporate, education, healthcare, and government sectors.    The NMC case study will be published in several languages, including English, Japanese, German, and French.

The timing of the release coincides with the third anniversary of the NMC Campus project, which was opened to the public in April, 2006.

St. Edward's University in Second Life!

SEU in SL

This academic year marks the beginning of the St. Edward's University campus in Second Life.  SEU has already started to use SL to help support a course in their communications program.  They are now expanding the pilot of Second Life to include additional usage by courses in the School of Business, and are also planning the design of a new Sim to help students learn about Plato's allegory of "the Cave".

Computers & Writing 2009!

Jan 15 2009 - Jan 30 2009

Conference Location

NMC Second Life Island

Computers and Writing Online 2009

Deadline: 1/30/09 midnight PST
Conference: 2/16/09-3/1/09

The New Media Consortium and Computers and Writing Online 2009 seek online presentations and discussions that explore the complex social, pedagogical and institutional dynamics around ubiquitous and/or sustainable computing.  Because computing technologies continue to extend their reach, we encourage proposals that explain the impact and challenges of ubiquitous and sustainable computing in different contexts: in educational settings, in workplaces, and even into (real or virtual) leisure spaces.

The Second Life portion of the conference includes two sessions: Wednesday, February 18th, 3-6pm PST and Sunday, March 4th, 12-3pm PST. The sessions take place on NMC's island.

There are also options for other modes of online presentation, including:
