The Millennial Classroom - Enhancing Teaching and Learning In our ever-changing world, today’s students will inherit a world that opens doors and provides access to seemingly unlimited information. The Reed Union School District recognizes that each student possesses unique and inherent abilities, gifts, and passions. The effective use of technology will offer opportunities for students to influence and effect change in their world. The District’s current Strategic plan empowers the district to “Create a culture that embraces and boldly utilize technology.” Our Millennial Classroom Project supports this vision by cultivating and creating flexible school environments. Possibilities to extend and enhance learning for each student become unlimited now that the tools to access relevant and needed information are available for every teacher and every learner. In this new vision, students are learning WITH technology—not ABOUT technology. The traditional classroom is expanded beyond the walls when students become active learners who can and do impact their own education.

We started in January 2008 with 55 Coho eggs in our classroom incubation tank. We are observing their growth while learning about ecosystems, sustainability and life cycles changes and adaptations.

Things happen when people think outside of the box and use technology to make ideas become reality. Central Texas partners use communication and collaboration to bring families together through videoconferencing and web casts. The educational process is enhanced when parents can be involved with their students. This can be a challenge when the parents are deployed soldiers but technology helps to meet the challenge.

On April 21, 2008, PreK-Grade 3 students from Burgundy Farm Country Day School in Alexandria, Virginia, were able to ask questions of the Education Staff of Hanauma Bay, Oahu, Hawaii by way of an iChat videoconference.

Students learn to evaluate and curate their own art show/portfolio.

What happens in our “normal” day at Shannon Elementary? The students will explore the task of explaining to an audience what happens in a normal day at school. They will be able to tell what they like (or don’t like) about this part of the day.
