Where EdTech Leaders Bring Horizon Project Research to Life

What are some great applications of game-play/gamification in education? What are the elements that make learning engaging? How do you deal with the criticism that learning through games is distracting? Where is gamification headed?

Join the NMC and our panel of games and gamification thought leaders on Wednesday, March 5 at 10am PT / 12pm CT/ 1pm ET (check for local time). This one-hour session will be held in the Google+ On Air platform and broadcasted live on YouTube. Participation is free for all attendees.

 

While a growing number of educational institutions and programs are experimenting with game-play, there has also been increased attention surrounding gamification — the integration of gaming elements, mechanics, and frameworks into non-game situations and scenarios. Businesses have embraced gamification as a way to design incentive programs that engage employees through rewards, leader boards, and badges, often with a mobile component. Although more nascent than in military or industry settings, the gamification of education is gaining support among educators who recognize that effectively designed games can stimulate large gains in productivity and creativity among learners.

Meet the Panel

Panel Moderator: Mario Herger, founder and partner, Enterprise Gamification Consultancy LLC

Mario Herger had been Senior Innovation Strategist at SAP Labs in Palo Alto, California and Global Head of the Gamification Initiative at SAP where he had worked for 15 years. In 2013, he co-founded and leads the Austrian Innovation Center Silicon Valley (AICSV). Herger has encountered and supported gamification efforts from multiple levels and departments, like Sustainability, On Demand, Mobile, HR, Training & Education, Banking, etc. He has driven the awareness around gamification by organizing and leading innovation events around this topic, holding dozens of one- or two-day gamification workshops, working with gamification platform- & service-providers and game studios, consulting and advising organizations, and by incorporating gamification into SAP's strategy.

Alice Keeler, Professor of Curriculum, Instruction and Technology at California State University Fresno and Teacher on Special Assignment at ACEL Charter High School

Alice Keeler is a Google Certified Teacher, NMC K-12 Ambassador, Microsoft Innovative Educator and LEC Admin & Online and Blended certified. Currently, a Professor of Curriculum, Instruction and Technology at California State University Fresno and Teacher on Special Assignment at ACEL Charter High school, Alice has developed and taught online K-12 courses, as well as the Innovative Educator Advanced Studies Certificate (cue.org/ieasc). A believer in the importance of connectivity she founded #coffeecue (cue.org/coffee) and #profchat. She holds a Masters in Educational Media Design and Technology and is a doctoral student at Boise State University in EdTech with a focus on gamification. She is passionate that kids are not failures, and using technology to change the way we approach learning and grading. Alice tweets @alicekeeler and blogs at alicekeeler.com.

Ruth Nemire, Associate Executive Vice President of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy

Ruth Nemire is the Associate Executive Vice President of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. Dr. Nemire’s responsibilities include strategic planning, developing and assessing programs, design of products and services to assist members in leadership and curriculum development, educational research and scholarly teaching including interprofessional education, global partnerships and development. She is responsible for scanning and interpretation of the higher education, health professions education, and health care environments for trends, information, and resources of potential interest and benefit for members. She works with leadership groups to facilitate their work in service to AACP members and builds relationships with external organizations that complement and support programs of the Association. She is leading development of serious games for health professions education.

Alice W. Schwarz, Museum Educator, Metropolitan Museum of Art

Alice W. Schwarz has been a museum educator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for 30 years. Although she teaches in all collections at the Museum her greatest interest and study is American art, pre-WW I.  She has taught teacher workshops, trained volunteers, lead tours for all ages, and published educational materials including Murder at the Met: An American Art Mystery the Museum’s first mobile detective game. She is currently head of Teen Programs, weekend, and holiday classes and events for ages 11-18. Alice has a BA triple-major in Art History, History, and Studio Art and a MS in Museum Education.

Masha Turchinsky, Senior Manager for Digital Learning & Senior Producer, Creative Production, Metropolitan Museum of Art

Masha Turchinsky is Senior Manager of Digital Learning & Senior Producer, Digital Media at The Metropolitan Museum of Art where she leads the development and implementation of public-facing digital content and educational technology—for use in-gallery, online and on mobile— to support unique opportunities for 21st-century learning and engagement through the Museum’s collection, exhibitions and related activities. Masha holds an Ed.M degree in International Educational Development from Columbia University, Teachers College, an MA in Education from New York University and a bachelors degree from Georgetown University, School of Languages and Linguistics.

Brian Yuhnke, Instructional Designer at Case Western Reserve University

Brian Yuhnke adamantly believes that if teaching is boring for the faculty then it is even more so for the students. Brian is motivated to engage faculty in the use of technology to make learning fun and innovative. He is an Instructional Designer at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he develops and maintains the university’s academic technology architecture, and an instructor for the School of Education and Higher Development at the University of Colorado Denver. Prior to moving to Cleveland, Brian did sensational stuff with video, supported web conferencing and online lecture recording and researched emerging technologies for CU Online at the University of Colorado, Denver. He has earned a MEd in Instructional Technology and a Bachelor of Arts in Video and Audio Production from Kent State University.
