2013 NMC Horizon Project Summit > The Future of Education

At the first-ever NMC Horizon Project Summit last year, 100 thought leaders from 20 countries looked at the work of the Horizon Project over the last ten years to gain insights into how emerging technologies have influenced teaching, learning, and campus decision-making. What emerged were the Horizon Project’s Ten Metatrends that those 100 experts felt would continue to be drivers of change for at least the next decade.

In 2013, we again brought together a global community of action-oriented leaders from higher education, schools, museums, and libraries, building on the extraordinary work that took place in the same setting last year. Attendees at this meeting were theree by invitation only and included members of the past Horizon Advisory Boards, NMC C-LAB members, and specially invited others. It was a genuinely exceptional group of thought leaders, and a genuinely unique gathering. It also represented an opportunity for our sponsors to be at the table among the ranks of some of the most forward thinking thought leaders anywhere in the world, and on the cutting-edge of new projects.

A key new addition in 2013 was a focus on action, and we wanted to not only showcase the best of the ideas and vision embedded in this unique group, as we did last year — but move them into reality, or help to scale them up.  We invited ten extraordinary visionaries from the invitees to present their ideas and projects to this uniquely connected audience, who were asked to help refine those ideas with feedback, and help to set them into motion.

About the NMC Horizon Project

The NMC Horizon Project may very well be producing the single most important body of research into emerging technology within the world of education. With well over one million downloads and 27 translations in the past eleven years, the NMC Horizon Report series provides the higher education, K-12, and museum communities across the globe a key strategic technology planning tool that is continuously refreshed and updated.  

The NMC and the Horizon Project are best known for its flagship Horizon Reports that focus on higher education and K12 globally, but the research into the uptake of technology goes far beyond what is published in those key publications.  The NMC does extensive work regionally around the world as well, working with ministries of education and other key groups to produce specialized reports for Latin America, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and global STEM+ education, and is currently working on projects in Singapore and Brazil, and planning projects for India and Africa. The Horizon Project research is truly global in scope and reach.
