Preconference Workshops

Preconference sessions require advance registration, and fees for these special extended-length workshops are in addition to the normal Summer Conference registration fees. All preconference sessions were held Wednesday, June 16.

Seating is limited, so early registration is recommended.

Apple Final Cut Pro Register Online
This double-length hands-on session will be a whirlwind of information on video editing with Final Cut Pro. The session will start with a basic review of the powerful features of Final Cut Pro, and move on to the detailed, finer points of editing, composting, title creation, soundtrack design and preparation for delivery of your project. This session also takes you through some amazing tips, tricks, and other secrets that will put you in the "power user" status by the end of the day. To participate, you should have a thorough familiarity with nonlinear film editing, OS X, and previous experience using Final Cut Pro.

Digital Storytelling Workshop Register Online

Have you mastered some of the tools of digital media, but you still are trying to master the art of good storytelling? If you are new to digital media design, are you looking for effective ways to immerse yourself in the production process?

Daniel Weinshenker, director of the Denver office of the Center for Digital Storytelling (CDS), will provide a series of hands on exercises in this all-day workshop that will help you develop and edit an effective story. He will integrate the approach and methods used by CDS, and provide a series of design examples of stories from a range of work that will provide a history and overview to the growing movement around the Digital Storytelling workshop practice.

He will provide hands on tutorials in the Photoshop and Premiere tutorials in the context of Digital Storytelling, and discuss CDS approaches to leading intensive production workshops in digital video. He will also provide a set of digital materials for participants, but you are encouraged to bring your own digital materials as well.

Adobe Photoshop CS: Advanced Tips, Tricks and Techniques Register Online
In this preconference workshop you will learn the core materials for tool usage and color correction as well as how to obtain the best digital images. We will cover how to produce complex selections and paths, discover creative uses for filters and learn how to take advantage of adjustment layers. Automation features will be covered, as well as creating buttons to speed up production tasks. Previous Photoshop experience required.

Using Flash: A Rich Media Tool for Instructional Design Register Online
Educators face challenges in converting text-based knowledge into multimedia-based learning objects, but the effort is important, as once converted, these materials are often more interesting and effective from the learners' prospective. This workshop will concentrate on how to use Macromedia Flash to deliver rich-media-based learning and instructional experiences, with a focus on authoring for an audience of learners.

Digital Rights Management and Copyright Register Online
In this preconference workshop, participants will be introduced to copyright law and gain understanding of the dynamics behind the explosion of interest in and concern about Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies. Learn about copyright basics and the recent changes to copyright law, including the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and the Technology, Education and Copyright Harmonization (TEACH) Act. An overview of Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies and their relation to copyright law will also be provided. The presenter will offer a balance of presentation and discussion, with a focus on identifying some best practices and strategies for anticipating and planning for change in our approach to project development, faculty service, content purchasing, and user support.
