Session Description
Increasing diversity in the media technology workforce is a national concern. This presentation discusses an innovative project for middle school students, which develops awareness, interest and skills by immersing them in an Interactive Journalism Institute. Students build and maintain an online magazine, learn principled journalism and media technology skills. The underlying core belief is that a child’s career path choices are influenced by perceived competency, and those perceptions are dependent upon experiences in which students are creators rather than merely consumers of media.
