CDB Barkley: Welcome folks to the NMC teachers buzz

Lyr Lobo: Heya Trey

Lyr Lobo: Buki ...greetings

CDB Barkley: For those that made it to Lyr's place

Lyr Lobo smiles and nods

Lyr Lobo: Welcome!

Lyr Lobo: Hello Professor Ed!

Lyr Lobo: Carl...

Professor Beliveau: greetings lyr

Professor Beliveau: thanks for having us

Lyr Lobo: Jeffronius *smiles* welcome... it's great to see you, Professor

Lyr Lobo: you had some good questions at the Fall conference

Lyr Lobo: want to try out some scenes?

Lyr Lobo: now, a couple of them are larger

CDB Barkley: Can you first intro yourself and what this is?

Lyr Lobo: so I sometimes move the rug to accommodate it for everyone

Lyr Lobo: sure, CDB

Lyr Lobo: I'm Lyr Lobo from Colorado Technical University... this is the Paradise blanket, a commercial tool for rezzing temporary spaces

Lyr Lobo: I teach doctoral, graduate, undergraduate, and faculty classes, both online and in world

Lyr Lobo laughs

Lyr Lobo: I teach doctoral, graduate, undergraduate, and faculty classes, both online and in world

Paradise Blanket: This blanket is now locked. Only the Owner may use it. Pay to use is now disabled

Lyr Lobo: I locked down the blanket for a moment

Lyr Lobo: so I don't get ejected *chuckles*

Lyr Lobo: still, I want you to be able to see how it works firsthand

Lyr Lobo: hehe

Lyr Lobo: I saw this concept

Lyr Lobo: and realized that the beauty of this world

Lyr Lobo: is that it can change rapidly

Lyr Lobo: and leverage a lot of different capabilities...all at once

Lyr Lobo: why have physical classrooms when our learning spaces can change...to accommodate the mood or the content?

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.000000M

Lyr Lobo: now, not all of these scenes are suitable for a classroom

Lyr Lobo: but the concept is intriguing

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.000000M

Lyr Lobo: welcome to Greece *chuckles*

Lyr Lobo: imagine if we could add to the scenes

Lyr Lobo: develop our own content

Lyr Lobo: or have students develop content

Lyr Lobo: even store their portfolio contributoins

Lyr Lobo: and rez them when needed

Lyr Lobo: saving storage, prims and using the scenes when needed...putting them up when we are done

Lyr Lobo: What kinds of learning spaces or scenes appeal to you?

Dan Undertone: I'll jump in

MLani Montgomery: Something that reflects content.

Dan Undertone: I'm working with theatrical spaces

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.000000M

Dan Undertone: different audience performer relationships

Khadijah Burali: I teach journalism, so I like the idea of being able to simulate breaking news situations.

Enjay Ellison: something that makes students think out of the box

Paradise Blanket: Please be seated on the blanket.

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.014893M

CDB Barkley: Natural landscapes

Paradise Blanket: Please be seated on the blanket.

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.014893M

Loretta Lobo: landscape architecture desgin

Corwin Carillon: folks just to let you know I'm gonna record this and hope that is ok with everyone

Khadijah Burali: That's great

Enjay Ellison: fine

Professor Beliveau: k

Lyr Lobo: *smiles* that's fine, Corwin..thanks!

Corwin Carillon: we will post the transcript on the wiki

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.000000M

Lyr Lobo: now, I'd do that water a bit differently

Lyr Lobo chuckles

Lyr Lobo: always a critic in every crowd, eh?

Lyr Lobo: but this idea intrigues me

Shadow, Lyr's Assistant: In the event that the self destruct sequence is activated, contact Lyr Lobo.

Lyr Lobo: if you do not have a flight feather, feel welcome to click my assistant for one

Shadow, Lyr's Assistant: Thank you!

Beatnik Sage: what does it do?

Lyr Lobo: it allows you to fly above the flight plane and hover at higher elevations

Lyr Lobo: just wear it..it is on the notecard she hands out

Flight Band: All Go

Flight Band: All Go

Khadijah Burali: Where is Shadow?

Shadow, Lyr's Assistant: Malfunction. Need input!

X-Flight, Carbon Rod X SLOWER SPEED: All Go

X-Flight, Carbon Rod X SLOWER SPEED: All Go

Lyr Lobo: Hello Porterhouse *smiles* Ivanka

Lyr Lobo: right behind me

Lyr Lobo: she is always behind me, facing me...folllowing

CDB Barkley: Is there a specific name for this device?

Khadijah Burali: Thanks

Lyr Lobo smiles

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.000000M

Lyr Lobo: you are most welcome

Lyr Lobo: now, with a class, we often do not have more than 10 in world at a time... tho some of my classes have 20

Corwin Carillon: woah crowded!

Lyr Lobo: these scenes are smaller sized

Corwin Carillon:  :)

Lyr Lobo: hehe yes

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.000000M

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.000000M

Aaron Kembla: do you change environment to set mood or to suit activities?

Lyr Lobo: yes

Lyr Lobo: hehehe

Lyr Lobo: I do both

Lyr Lobo: so far, I have used this for small group class activities... or for virtual office hours

MLani Montgomery: Does it matter where you rez the blanket for these uses?

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.000000M

Corwin Carillon: Lyr have you had students create scenes?

Lyr Lobo: and one is suitable for a scene

Lyr Lobo: one is working on a HUD

Lyr Lobo: I have had a couple working on projects

Lyr Lobo: hmm, chat lag...my responses are sometimes out of order...sorry

Khadijah Burali: how would you compare the students' participation in this space to their participation in an online chat or discussion group?

Lyr Lobo: hmm it is richer...more immersive

Winston Sinclair: can you say more about what you mean by that?

Enjay Ellison: are they more invested in learning?

Lyr Lobo: we can accomplish in an hour here what we would discuss in lecture or the lab in a few hours

Lyr Lobo: yes

Lyr Lobo: they do not come into my sessions for more than an hour or two

Lyr Lobo: by then, they are exhausted,a nd have a finished product

Lyr Lobo chuckles

Corwin Carillon: hehe

Lyr Lobo: I pattern my sessions after the one hour classes given in world

Lyr Lobo: then have them experiment and design at a slower pace

Lyr Lobo: on their own

Aaron Kembla: can you give us an example of a product they would create3?

Lyr Lobo: hmm...

Corwin Carillon: I feel exhausted with all the scence changes  ;-)

Lyr Lobo: yup it is information overload, Corwin

Paradise Blanket: Please be seated on the blanket.

Khadijah Burali: Do you find that this approach works better with some kinds of course content than others?

Lyr Lobo: so we introduce, create then take a leisurely pace

Lyr Lobo: so they can explore

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.014893M

CDB Barkley: What are the limits?

Lyr Lobo: hmm, so far, I've taught Game Design, Usability and Interaction, Software Requirements engineering..and Software Testing in here

CDB Barkley: avs, size?

MLani Montgomery: I've used Paradise Blankets, but I always use modules others have created. Is there a tutorial on how to create your own modules?

Lyr Lobo: but I could teach my Faculty course in here, too..on how to teach online

Lyr Lobo: no there isn't, MLani

Lyr Lobo: we tested making 20x20 scenes...and 30x30 scenes

MLani Montgomery: How can we learn how to do it? Is there a class?

Lyr Lobo: larger than 30x30 and they are hard to link

Lyr Lobo: due to distance from the extremities

CDB Barkley: What goes into a module?

Lyr Lobo: you can still rez them

Lyr Lobo: you collect all of a scene into one object

Lyr Lobo: thta goes into the inventory/contents of the blanket

Lyr Lobo: and is called by the menu

ZiQuin'z retextured Lyr's Rug - Lyr Demo Version - v2: Error: no such menu: DEFAULT

MLani Montgomery: Where do you do this creation?

Enjay Ellison: and where do you get the blanket?

Lyr Lobo: you can create a scene in any sandbox or location

Corwin Carillon: the courtyard community

Lyr Lobo: then select all of its pieces and link, or select the linked parts and take it as one item

Lyr Lobo: rename it

MLani Montgomery: Then link the components and put it into one box? Then put the box into the contents of the blanket?

Lyr Lobo: then call that name with the menu for the device that rezzes it

Lyr Lobo: yes

Lyr Lobo: i don't box mine

Lyr Lobo: but the builders' buddy can box it

Lyr Lobo: a rezzing tool that is open source

MLani Montgomery: Just link and rename? that will allow you to take it into your inventory and load it into the blanket's contents?

Lyr Lobo: see, if you highlight and select all of the objects

Lyr Lobo: they are stored in a single object

CDB Barkley: Can it remember the state of a scene?

MLani Montgomery: cool

Lyr Lobo: the trick is to rez them as one item, correctly oriented...

CDB Barkley: e.g., if one were to re-arrange things?

Lyr Lobo: you can rearrange them before collecting/taking and rezzing

Lyr Lobo: or after rezzing, CDB

CDB Barkley: Or to say, save the planets in a partuclar arrangement?

MLani Montgomery: CDB?

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.000000M

MLani Montgomery: Do you have to buy a blanket, or is the software open source?

Corwin Carillon: CDB = CDB Barkley Mlani

Lyr Lobo: if you use this system, you buy the blanket

MLani Montgomery: Are there other systems?

Lyr Lobo: we are making our own system, as is the NMC

Enjay Ellison: where can we buy it?

Lyr Lobo: hmm, this is from the Courtyard...

Enjay Ellison: ty

MLani Montgomery: How can we get the NMC system?

Lyr Lobo: I can provide that landmark later *grins* but these scenes may not be everything that you desire

Lyr Lobo: it is in development and will undergo testing soon, I do believe...I don't want to steal their thunder *smiles*

Enjay Ellison: but if you have the blanket can you restock with your own scenes?

CDB Barkley: The NMC is building this functionality into our new campus expansion, by end of the year

Lyr Lobo: it will be very exciting

Paradise Blanket: This blanket is now open for public use

CDB Barkley: A focus less on building static structures, but an environment more like an empty space that can be rezzed with what is needed for a particular need

Lyr Lobo: I made the blanket public

Lyr Lobo: please keep the elevation at 300 meters

Lyr Lobo: *chuckles*

Lyr Lobo: if you would like to try it out, feel welcome

CDB Barkley: The metaphor is a showbox diorama

Lyr Lobo: at 300 meters, we stay here

Lyr Lobo: yes, CDB...

CDB Barkley: shoebox

Paradise Blanket: Please be seated on the blanket.

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.014893M

Lyr Lobo: who would like to try it out? *smiles*

Lyr Lobo: if so, let me know and touch the blanket...

Lyr Lobo: select 300 meters

Corwin Carillon: if you want the landmark for the courtyard where they sell the blanket, click on the wooden box near me

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.000000M

Corwin Carillon: LOL

Lyr Lobo: it is not cheap, so do not feel tied to this single tool

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.000000M

Nelg Ariel: Hi folks

Lyr Lobo: if people are interested, we'll get our prototype working so you can add scenes and find new uses for it

Enjay Ellison: Lyr, once you have a Paradise blanket can you load your own scenes?

Lyr Lobo: Hi Nelg

Corwin Carillon: *smiles* v true Lyr

Nelg Ariel: hi Lyr

Lyr Lobo: I don't think so, Enjay

Lyr Lobo: I think that you use their scenes, but I could be wrong

Tab Scott has indicated consent to be recorded.

Enjay Ellison: in that case please get your prototype working! lol

Lyr Lobo: I have not tried it...as the device is no modify, and comes with a module script...for updates

Lyr Lobo: *laughs*

Pbear Petit: takes some getting used to .

Strawberry Ice Cream: Ice Cream! Yum!! (Choose wear from your inventory)

Lyr Lobo: the question also is, what features would you want to see

Lyr Lobo: on the basic menu

Beatnik Sage: with something like this though... why would anyone have any static scenes?

Lyr Lobo: for our needs as educators or as presenters?

Enjay Ellison: the ability to customize

Corwin Carillon: hmmm

Lyr Lobo: My point exactly, Beatnik

Shimoda Nakamichi has indicated consent to be recorded.

Enjay Ellison: so that students could build, revise, keep, discard...

Lyr Lobo: static scenes are great for creating identity

MLani Montgomery: Can you change things around once the skybox has been rezzed--during class?

Lyr Lobo: such as a campus identity

Corwin Carillon: not too sure I want the scenes

Lyr Lobo: yes MLani

Nolligan Nino: is information about this product available online ?

Lyr Lobo: you can add to it

Lyr Lobo: for these commercial ones

Lyr Lobo: if you make your own, you can modify at will

MLani Montgomery: How do you make your own?

Lyr Lobo: as whatever you have can either be taken into inventory

Lyr Lobo: or deleted

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.000000M

Lyr Lobo: ann you build, Mlani, and link the build, then take it into your inventory

Lyr Lobo: then drop it into the blanket's inventory

Lyr Lobo: (contents tab)

Corwin Carillon: if the students create scenes as projects, it would be useful for project presentations

Beatnik Sage: I'd still keep the main campus as a module.. even if you only change it for a big stadium type event twice a year

MLani Montgomery: I mean, can you make your own blanket with the software?

Lyr Lobo: I can describe that process in greater detail later

Lyr Lobo: yes MLani

MLani Montgomery: Where can we find out how to make our own blankets?

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.014893M

Lyr Lobo: We just went ot 500 meters *smiles*

Lyr Lobo: yes, MLani, you could create copies of the blanket

Lyr Lobo: and store different scenes in them

Lyr Lobo: this one currently has about 26 scenes on it

Lyr Lobo: I could add more

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.014893M

Loretta Lobo: wheeee!

Lyr Lobo chuckles

Loretta Lobo: not sure what is going on exactly-but it IS fun

CDB Barkley: So if you could create any learning space with this tool, what would it be?

Corwin Carillon: ideas everyone?

CDB Barkley: It begs the question about the importance of building lavish SL builds?

MLani Montgomery: So if I have a blanket already, I can make copies of it? Or do I need to make one from scratch?

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.014893M

Nolligan Nino: historical scenes

MLani Montgomery: Oooo, Historical scenes!

Beatnik Sage: maybe the same spot geographically that is going through time

Paradise Blanket: This blanket is now locked. Only the Owner may use it. Pay to use is now disabled

Lyr Lobo: yes

MLani Montgomery: Time Machine!

Lyr Lobo: historical scenes

Lyr Lobo: places..

CDB Barkley: Spaces we cannot visit easily?

CDB Barkley: Like planets?

Lyr Lobo: seasons...moods, environments... extra dimensional spaces

Beatnik Sage: other planetary surfaces

Nolligan Nino: we can't visit the past easily - lol

Enjay Ellison: role playing scenes; for example you could train students in rl business practices

MLani Montgomery: Models of internal organs for anatomy study.

Shadow, Lyr's Assistant: Thank you!

Beatnik Sage: microscopic environments

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.000000M

CDB Barkley: Scenes that chaneg in response to actions?

Enjay Ellison: such as dealing with a client who is a real pain

Khadijah Burali: That would be useful

Lyr Lobo: hm, that would be really cool, CDB

Lyr Lobo: i locked down the blanket for a moment *grins*

Beatnik Sage: molecular levels

Lyr Lobo: and yes, based on events, touches, or triggers

Cosmic Osumi has indicated consent to be recorded.

Lyr Lobo: you could have changing scenes

Khadijah Burali: I could also see using something like this to have students practice interviewing people.

Enjay Ellison: I teach communication design in rl, so it would be useful for portfolio presentations

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.000000M

Lyr Lobo: yes, organizational behavior and social networks

Beatnik Sage: circuit boards

Corwin Carillon: yep!

Tab Scott: Architectural scenes

Lyr Lobo grins

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.000000M

CDB Barkley: Do people get trapped into things rezzed on top of them?

Lyr Lobo: definitely

Lyr Lobo: hehe

Lyr Lobo: if you get trapped, easy to get you out

MLani Montgomery: Yes, you just choose to sit elsewhere, and you get out.

Corwin Carillon: yep .. I did lol

Lyr Lobo: Welcome to those who are just joining us *smiles*

Lyr Lobo: this saloon includes games and dances, I think....

Driftgirl Foulon: thanks

Montserrat Augustus: thank you, Lyr for the teleport

Paradise Group Land Radio Interface: Deed me to Group!

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.000000M

Lyr Lobo: I feel a little like the magic school bus

Dance 1: Nola Latynina, say '/1 Hide' to hide me, or '/1 Show' to make me show. Or just right-click and sit on me to use me.

Lyr Lobo: you are most welcome, Montserrat

Pbear Petit: /wave

Lyr Lobo: this scene has a working turntable

Lyr Lobo: for changing the music

Object: Ivanka Broadway, say '/1 Hide' to hide me, or '/1 Show' to make me show. Or just right-click and sit on me to use me.

Lyr Lobo: some scenese have working props and activiites

Corwin Carillon: hiya Kisa!

Kisa Naumova: Hey  :)

Kim Chihuly: nice way to introduce students to a variety of places in SL without having to teleport and worry about lag on someone else's property

Paradise Blanket: Please be seated on the blanket.

Beatnik Sage: I wonder if you could setup different musical venues that reflect different aucoustic feedback

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.014893M

Lyr Lobo: yes

Lyr Lobo: what kind of differences, Beatnik?

Beatnik Sage: like the difference between playing the cello in yoru garage or at carnigie hall

Lyr Lobo: ahh *grins* yes

Lyr Lobo: hmm, sound variances like the one you mentioned might be work initially

Lyr Lobo: we scripted the pianos down below using local sound

Lyr Lobo: otherwise, you use streaming media

Beatnik Sage: try playing an original composition at Abbey Hell

Beatnik Sage: Hall

Lyr's Jukebox from Haven: Station changed to: Classical contemporary

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.000000M

Lyr Lobo chuckles

Lyr Lobo: pardon me for hiding the poses... no sleeping on the job! *chuckles*

CDB Barkley: Has anyone asked the cost of the blanket?

Lyr Lobo: Other questions?

Lyr Lobo: hmm just under 10,000 lindens with all of the modules...maybe a bit more with newer additions

Lyr Lobo smiles

Lyr Lobo: configurable, controllable

CDB Barkley: Not bad! Cost of good skin  ;-)

Lyr Lobo: and you can add different features...much better

Enjay Ellison: Lyr, previously you talked about putting together an archive of things to use in scenes; are you still working on that and would it be public or semi-public?

CDB Barkley: Who sells it?

Lyr Lobo: that is why I recommend growing our own

Lyr Lobo: a very good skin...*laughs* my skin was 1500

Lyr Lobo: hmm, The Courtyard...

Corwin Carillon: click on the box CDB

CDB Barkley: mine was 500

Winston Sinclair: lyr, you mentioned you've used it for office hours -- what's the benefit of SL (or the blanket) for that?

Lyr Lobo: there is a team of designers

Lyr Lobo: for the scenes

Khadijah Burali: I wonder what the experience has been with convincing college administrators to spend money on these kinds of enhancements.

Lyr Lobo: well it helps us to interact and think differently

Lyr Lobo: I like to set up my japanese meditation table with poses, invite the students to sit

Lyr Lobo: and we can build, script and talk

Lyr Lobo: while discussing their issues (individually or in groups)

Lyr Lobo: here are some samples

Lyr Lobo: since you can be seated while working...it helps everyone think differently...try them out

CDB Barkley: I am curious to hear people talk about the importance of "place" here.... versus interaction....

Lyr Lobo: just sit on the cushions

CDB Barkley: ... in regards to people who build replicas of RL places?

Lyr Lobo: well those are great for identity and recognition

Lyr Lobo: also, as Tab mentioned, for architecture studies.... and developing a common look and feel

Lyr Lobo: for a property

Lyr Lobo: that's important too...

Pbear Petit has indicated consent to be recorded.

Paradise Blanket: You have arrived at 300.000000M

CDB Barkley: One of my faves

CDB Barkley: Need more tiki bars

Lyr Lobo grins

MLani Montgomery: Could one venue be an art gallery to show student works?

Lyr Lobo: hehe feel welcome to grab a beverage from the tiki

Lyr Lobo: yes, MLani

Lyr Lobo: the art featured on the wall was created by Ehdward Spengler, an artist in SL

Beatnik Sage: you'd have to link the works in first though right?

MLani Montgomery: So basically, rather than having to purchase a paradise blanket, NMC is looking to create its own build that we all could have access to?

Tropical Drink Tray: Aloha! (Choose wear from your inventory)

Khadijah Burali: That would be great!

Lyr Lobo: Yes, MLani

Lyr Lobo: I will also be making mine accessible too

Ron Bu: yes

Lyr Lobo: and helping people who wish to create learning spaces

MLani Montgomery: When will we know of its availability, and how can I help?

Enjay Ellison: wonderful

Ron Bu: hi glen

Lyr Lobo grins

Ron Bu: still having difficulty getting around

Lyr Lobo: they are beginning testing in a few days, I believe...

Tropical Drink Tray: Aloha! (Choose wear from your inventory)

MLani Montgomery: It will be announced through NMC Teacher Buzz?

Lyr Lobo: it should not be too long, but again, they have a release schedule for announcing it

Tropical Drink Tray: Aloha! (Choose wear from your inventory)

Tropical Drink Tray: Aloha! (Choose wear from your inventory)

Lyr Lobo: I think so

MLani Montgomery: Is help needed in testing?

Tropical Drink Tray: Aloha! (Choose wear from your inventory)

CDB Barkley: We'll post on the NMC Campus Observer when Lyr shares

Lyr Lobo grins

CDB Barkley: http://www.nmc.org/sl/

Strawberry dipped in Melted Chocolate: Yummm! Fresh Strawberry dipped in melted chocolate

CDB Barkley: Let's have a big round of applause for Lyr for demo-ing this!

Enjay Ellison: will the NMC version have defined scenes, or will we be able to build our own to use in it?

Kim Chihuly: /clap

Enjay Ellison claps

CDB Barkley applauds liek a big

Khadijah Burali: /clap

Corwin Carillon: tyvm Lyr

CDB Barkley:

Ron Bu: clap

Enjay Ellison: thanks Lyr!

Kisa Naumova: /applaud

Beatnik Sage: /claps

CDB Barkley howls at the moon

Kim Chihuly: very cool lyr - thanks for putting it together

Jazber Paravane: Thank you Lyr.

Lyr Lobo: Thank you all for coming! *smiles*

Khadijah Burali: Yes, this has been interesting!

Lyr Lobo: please, feel welcome to keep in touch and to contact me about your interests

Lyr Lobo grins

MLani Montgomery: Can we find out about the training you do to work with your faculty about teaching distance classes?

Couch 2 F: Kooper Petrel, say '/1 Hide' to hide me, or '/1 Show' to make me show. Or just right-click and sit on me to use me.

Ron Bu: yes, more about trainging

Couch 2 F: Kooper Petrel, say '/1 Hide' to hide me, or '/1 Show' to make me show. Or just right-click and sit on me to use me.

Lyr Lobo: we could put together a training session

Tab Scott: I'd definitely like to work with you on learning spaces.

Lyr Lobo: for a future Buzz... or a separate event

Enjay Ellison: me too

Beatnik Sage: cool

Tab Scott: thanks, Lyr

Corwin Carillon: sounds great for a future buzz lyr

CDB Barkley: Thanks for coming!

Lyr Lobo: Thank you all for coming *grins*

Lyr Lobo: i'll open the blanket now

CDB Barkley: Next Buzz in 2 weeks, 6:00 PM PST

Lyr Lobo: so you can experiment

Loretta Lobo: enjoyed it- thanks

Paradise Blanket: This blanket is now open for public use

Porterhouse Dobbs: Thanks

Loretta Lobo: I appreciate it being at this time

Lyr Lobo: be sure to sit before it elevates *grins*

Khadijah Burali: Sounds good. See you then. Thanks again.

Lyr Lobo smiles

CDB Barkley: Bye now!

The meeting closed at 9:53 Linden time.
