[18:09] totally Vavoom: that's not supposed to sound like it does!!!

[18:09] totally Vavoom: ;-)

[18:09] CDB Barkley: Who is here for a first time visit to the Buzz?

[18:09] Johnny99 Gumshoe: maybe me?

[18:09] SueMaeLA Escape: This is my first

[18:09] CDB Barkley: Kind of an Angus Young look, Abdiel

[18:09] Katherine Watson: hi everybody

[18:10] Abdiel Merit: heh

[18:10] Stacy Narayan: I'm also here for the first time

[18:10] Larry Pixel: i brought a guest

[18:10] Larry Pixel: Abbaca

[18:10] Kevin Galbraith: Hi totally. good to see you again

[18:10] Basic Chair: Right click me and choose 'Sit Here' to sit down

[18:10] Abbaca Aoi: Hi all :)

[18:10] totally Vavoom: Hi Abbaca!

[18:10] Larry Pixel: she has some surprises for us later

[18:10] Lyr Lobo: welcome

[18:10] Corwin Carillon: there are more chairs here

[18:10] CDB Barkley: We try to meet here every 2 weeks....

[18:10] Corwin Carillon: where I am sitting

[18:10] Larry Pixel: and is a SL artist and entrepreneur

[18:10] CDB Barkley: For those interested in the aspects of teaching in SL

[18:10] totally Vavoom: There's one next to Prof B too I think

[18:11] Calisto Encinal: Sorry. Stepped away for a minute. I'm new.

[18:11] CDB Barkley: Sometimes we just sit around and BS about things going on in SL

[18:11] CDB Barkley: Sometime we may have a guest

[18:11] totally Vavoom: sometimes ;-)

[18:11] CDB Barkley: Sometimes we speak grammatically correctly

[18:11] CDB Barkley: Sometimes we may do a "field trips"

[18:12] Lyr Lobo: As I need to leave early to teach a class, I'll pass out a notecard with some links to my information and support a future meeting as well *smiles*

[18:12] CDB Barkley: Thanks Lyr...

[18:12] CDB Barkley: We thought we might share some of the stuff presented last week at the NMC Conference

[18:12] CDB Barkley: ... and since Lyr needs to go off and teach soon, we are letting her say anything first

[18:12] totally Vavoom: Kevin, do you have wings on/

[18:13] Corwin Carillon: so it may help if you we know who was there ...

[18:13] CDB Barkley: She had an amazing session in San Antonio

[18:13] Kevin Galbraith: not me, totally.

[18:13] totally Vavoom: thanks Lyr!

[18:13] Sariah Chihuly: hi.

[18:14] Farley Scarborough: /Thanks, Lyr

[18:14] Dagmar Kojishi: Thanks!

[18:14] CDB Barkley: So ijn two weeks, Lyr will demo for our group something she showed us last weejk

[18:15] Corwin Carillon: http://www.nmc.org/events/2006fallregional/presentation_links.shtml

[18:15] Lyr Lobo: yes *smiles*

[18:15] CDB Barkley: Can you give a quick overview, Lyr?

[18:15] Lyr Lobo: I'll discuss some of our experimental designs in SL

[18:15] Lyr Lobo: that support education

[18:15] Corwin Carillon: if you click on the globe by the fire it wll load the webpage

[18:15] Lyr Lobo: demonstrate temporary learning spaces

[18:15] In Kenzo is Online

[18:15] Lyr Lobo: and answer questions about how you can use these strategies

[18:16] Lyr Lobo: for your campuses and classes

[18:16] Lyr Lobo: essentially

[18:16] Lyr Lobo: i'm working on learning spaces that are dynamic

[18:16] Lyr Lobo: so we can hold class in different spaces...places, timezones, periods in history, etc.

[18:17] Lyr Lobo: catering to different kinds of learners and needs

[18:17] Lyr Lobo: also for General Education as well as computer science (my subject)

[18:17] Lyr Lobo: so imagine for a moment

[18:17] CDB Barkley: She is quite a serious gamer, majorly serious ;-)

[18:17] Lyr Lobo: that took your class

[18:17] Lyr Lobo: to another space

[18:17] Lyr Lobo: hehehe

[18:17] Lyr Lobo: if you could rez a scene for an hour or two

[18:17] Lyr Lobo: and after you were done

[18:17] Lyr Lobo: it would disappear

[18:17] Lyr Lobo: cleaning itself up

[18:17] Lyr Lobo: self cleaning, ever changing

[18:17] Lyr Lobo: creative learning environments

[18:17] Lyr Lobo: that were not tied to your prim limits

[18:18] Lyr Lobo: where students could move and modify the learning environment without fear

[18:18] Lyr Lobo: and with a process to save work

[18:18] Lyr Lobo: in progress

[18:18] Lyr Lobo: as it "dies" upon close of the class

[18:18] Lyr Lobo: next time you rez it

[18:18] Lyr Lobo: you get a clean copy

[18:18] Lyr Lobo: and all within 10 seconds

[18:18] Lyr Lobo: or less

[18:18] Lyr Lobo: *smiels*

[18:18] Lyr Lobo: any questions?

[18:18] Lyr Lobo: that is to start

[18:18] Lyr Lobo: my long term plan

[18:18] JJ Drinkwater: Where do I get one?

[18:19] JJ Drinkwater: :)

[18:19] Lyr Lobo: is to organize and package learning objects

[18:19] CDB Barkley: It is similar in concept to what the new NMC Campus will have as well

[18:19] Lyr Lobo: to assess their effectiveness

[18:19] Johnny99 Gumshoe: u r building thin in SL?

[18:19] Lyr Lobo: and to help you... tailor them to meet your needs

[18:19] Lyr Lobo: yes

[18:19] Lyr Lobo: we need more educational resources

[18:19] Johnny99 Gumshoe: is this the holodeck concept?

[18:19] Lyr Lobo: so our productivity increases

[18:19] Lyr Lobo: and so we can focus... like that, Johnny99

[18:19] Lyr Lobo: very similar, except, with objects that we can interact with

[18:19] Larry Pixel: Sounds like holodeck on steroids

[18:19] Sariah Chihuly: sounds like a holo deck.

[18:20] Lyr Lobo: rez scenes...rez a laboratory

[18:20] Lyr Lobo: rez... things we need

[18:20] Lyr Lobo: as well as subjects, historical settings, etc.

[18:20] CDB Barkley: Takes the emphasis from big fixed buildings

[18:20] Sariah Chihuly: would you tie it in to something like edu island? or do it from NMC?

[18:20] Larry Pixel: not that aspect we arealso building Lyr...we shoudl be sharign notes

[18:20] Lyr Lobo: my long term goal is to pioneer

[18:20] Sariah Chihuly: who would get access?

[18:20] Corwin Carillon: does it save where you got to Lyr?

[18:20] Corwin Carillon: you = student

[18:20] Lyr Lobo: a new way of looking at our learning activities and how we assess their effectiveness

[18:20] CDB Barkley: Like saving the states?

[18:20] Lyr Lobo: the scenes are saved, Corwin

[18:20] There is no suitable surface to sit on, try another spot.

[18:20] Corwin Carillon: cool

[18:21] Lyr Lobo: and the work within it, can also be saved

[18:21] totally Vavoom: awesome!

[18:21] Larry Pixel: reuseable

[18:21] Lyr Lobo: you would decide, Sariah

[18:21] Lyr Lobo: right now, the commercial version that i am using as prototype has a public and private mode...

[18:21] Lyr Lobo: but my goals

[18:21] totally Vavoom: so ina way the environment is moled to wahtever form will support the learning that will take place there?

[18:21] Sariah Chihuly: so I could link to it from where I am with my students and we'd just transport in?

[18:21] Lyr Lobo: include making a very different version

[18:21] Lyr Lobo: yes Totally

[18:22] Lyr Lobo: your subject, your learning activities

[18:22] Sariah Chihuly: what about doing it in different languages?

[18:22] Lyr Lobo: roleplaying..case study analysis

[18:22] Lyr Lobo: or just a new setting

[18:22] Lyr Lobo: yes, Sariah..it is possible

[18:22] Lyr Lobo: that means collaboration with people who speak those languages *smiles*

[18:22] Lyr Lobo: and need it

[18:22] Lyr Lobo: this concept I am opening up to collaborate with schools

[18:22] CDB Barkley: Well, show up on 11/27 and you'll get the full demo

[18:22] totally Vavoom: that would be great... the chair of our languages department, who teches Chinese, is very inerested in SL at the moment

[18:22] Sariah Chihuly: wow. I just came from a discussion of how SL is different from a chat room, wish I had you with me there.

[18:22] Abdiel Merit: I'd like my students to create these worlds and "hand them in" for evaluation

[18:22] Lyr Lobo: so we can come up with a variety of solutions

[18:22] Johnny99 Gumshoe is Offline

[18:22] Lyr Lobo: *smiles*

[18:22] CDB Barkley: Has anyone had luck with the universal language translator?

[18:23] Corwin Carillon: which one CDB?

[18:23] Sariah Chihuly: nope, I don't think we will either.

[18:23] Janor Slichter: a portfolio for work in SL, then

[18:23] Calisto Encinal: I'm in foreign language and want to build a virtual Mexican village. I would interact w/students. Virtual study abroad.

[18:23] Josephine Finn: I like the idea of students creating their own learning environments as well--whether they do it for evaluation or not.

[18:23] CDB Barkley: I played with the one from the SLED listserv

[18:23] Abdiel Merit: An SL experiential portfolio

[18:23] Sariah Chihuly: but I did have an idea -- many of us (not me unfortunately) work in institutions with graduate language programs.

[18:23] Sariah Chihuly: what about creating some workstudy translation gigs?

[18:23] Heidi TeeCee is Online

[18:24] Enjay Ellison: Lyr, to what extent would these be pre-fab as oppposed to generated by students? is it completely variable?

[18:24] Josephine Finn: particularly given all the media they can incorporate

[18:24] Lyr Lobo: great idea... hmmm

[18:24] Lyr Lobo: Enjay, having student designs is better still

[18:24] Lyr Lobo: my plan is to have some beginning ones

[18:24] Lyr Lobo: then to stimulate their projects and designs

[18:24] Sariah Chihuly: having students research period details would add to the fun.

[18:24] Lyr Lobo: student centered design reminds m eof the Ancient Spaces project by Seb's first year ancient civilization and greek students

[18:24] Sariah Chihuly: but you would need to get some very techie students.

[18:25] totally Vavoom: what kind of learning curve would there be Lyr?

[18:25] Lyr Lobo: they are doing it with less technical students, but that is a good point, Sariah...

[18:25] Enjay Ellison: depends on what they need to build

[18:25] Lyr Lobo: i can have my students productive in a very short timeframe, Totally

[18:25] Josephine Finn: well, and think about the multi media aspect of this--more on the fly than creating "learning objects" that are dependent on databases and/or programs.

[18:25] Corwin Carillon: could you mix students ...

[18:25] Sariah Chihuly: well I am just thinking that if you wnat someone to come in costume...

[18:25] Lyr Lobo: mostly because there are some basic skills that one can learn quickly

[18:25] totally Vavoom: and not all student may be interested or have the aptitude to build

[18:25] Corwin Carillon: COMP as builders, history sts as designers

[18:25] Lyr Lobo: hardest part is in envisioning and planning

[18:25] Sariah Chihuly: you would either need a great prop room or very skilled students.

[18:25] Johnny99 Gumshoe is Online

[18:25] Lyr Lobo: yes

[18:26] Abdiel Merit: Sure, the project could involve a team

[18:26] Lyr Lobo: i've been collecting costumes, props, and making things like mad

[18:26] Enjay Ellison: a collective prop room!

[18:26] Lyr Lobo: about 30,000 things and textures at the moment

[18:26] Sariah Chihuly: learning communities.

[18:26] Abdiel Merit: and it would be really cool to have the build-out occur over many semesters

[18:26] Lyr Lobo: yes

[18:26] totally Vavoom: the team aspect would make it more fun, and also tech them to work in teams ;-)

[18:26] Josephine Finn: definitely the skill needs to be there....but they already had skills in other places, how hard is building in SL anyway?

[18:26] CDB Barkley: Sigh, my inventory is a mess

[18:26] Sariah Chihuly: prop room sounds amazing.

[18:26] Lyr Lobo: I am going to set up a center for making these scenes and modules...

[18:26] Abdiel Merit: a course could extend itself over many semesters

[18:26] CDB Barkley: and no where near 30,000

[18:26] totally Vavoom: can't build to save my life!

[18:26] Lyr Lobo: well I've been building robots and a variety of devices

[18:26] CDB Barkley: How about some of the other San Antonio presenters here.... Abdiel?

[18:26] Lyr Lobo: to learn specific skills

[18:27] Sariah Chihuly: what about a wish list, too? that way we could all contribute if we found anything.

[18:27] totally Vavoom: CDB, sounds like our inventories are in the same state ;-)

[18:27] Abdiel Merit: Yes, Dean Barkley?

[18:27] Sariah Chihuly: also sounds like you need a good librarian to organize the props.

[18:27] Lyr Lobo: thank you all *waves* I must dash to teach a class, but please, IM me... *smiles*

[18:27] Enjay Ellison: thanks Lyr!

[18:27] CDB Barkley: Abdiel had an excellent session on "The Allegory effect"

[18:27] Abdiel Merit: Thanks, Lyr!

[18:27] Professor Beliveau: thanks lyr

[18:27] Corwin Carillon: thx lyr

[18:27] Isa Goodman: cu Lyr

[18:27] Calisto Encinal: Bye

[18:27] Johnny99 Gumshoe: thanks Lyr!

[18:27] Abdiel Merit: *blush

[18:27] totally Vavoom: bye Lyr!

[18:27] Boris Grommet: Thanks, Lyr!

[18:27] Sariah Chihuly: thanks.

[18:27] Larry Pixel: talk soon Lyr!

[18:27] CDB Barkley: Had some great quotes on the way Sl and RL co-exist

[18:27] Stacy Narayan: That was amazing, thank you

[18:28] Abdiel Merit: I just tried to send you my PPT, CDB, but it was too big to email

[18:28] Lyr Lobo smiles and waves

[18:28] CDB Barkley: Okay, I'll message you later and set up an FTP

[18:28] Dagmar Kojishi: Abdiel, use http://mailbigfiles.com/. It's free.

[18:28] CDB Barkley: Maybe gmail?

[18:28] Abdiel Merit: I'm really interested in the way RL and SL map onto each other

[18:28] Abdiel Merit: Ah, bigfiles and gmail--good call

[18:29] Abdiel Merit: I like the idea of oblique strategies

[18:29] Abdiel Merit: cf. Brian Eno

[18:29] In Kenzo is Offline

[18:29] totally Vavoom: Hey Heidi!

[18:29] Abdiel Merit: and I think metaphor is an exercise in the unexpected

[18:29] Abdiel Merit: and my other favorite wiggy thing to say

[18:29] CDB Barkley: Some audio form his session: http://media.nmc.org/2006/11/allegory-effect.mp3

[18:30] Lyr Lobo is Offline

[18:30] Abdiel Merit: is that "averted vision is the sharpest vision"

[18:30] Abdiel Merit: Astronomers train themselves to look out of the corners of their eyes to spot faint stars

[18:30] Abdiel Merit: because we're really blind in the center of our visual fields

[18:30] Heidi TeeCee: I'll try

[18:31] Abdiel Merit: Something about SL makes me have that "corner of the eye" feeling

[18:31] CDB Barkley: "Primary paradox of SL is that a person operates with a real meaning in an alienated situation"

[18:31] Josephine Finn: i hear ghosts exist in the peripheral vision

[18:31] Abdiel Merit: which I also get from poetry and metaphor genreally

[18:31] Abdiel Merit: heh

[18:31] Abdiel Merit: there you go again!

[18:31] Kevin Galbraith: :)

[18:31] totally Vavoom: lol!

[18:31] Abdiel Merit: Somethign uncanny here

[18:32] Abdiel Merit: we are all apparitions to each other in this space

[18:32] totally Vavoom: are you seeing ghosts abdiel;-)?

[18:32] Larry Pixel: So we spent three days with pathfinder athte confernece in San Antonio

[18:32] Abdiel Merit: real meanings in an alienated space

[18:32] Larry Pixel: he reports that Linden is working hard

[18:32] totally Vavoom: the thing is, how long does it feel/stay alienated/

[18:32] Abdiel Merit: good question

[18:32] totally Vavoom: Does it, at some point bcome real, as the real space becomes alienated?

[18:32] Abdiel Merit: literature has never lost that quality for me

[18:32] Abdiel Merit: I don't think SL would either

[18:33] Larry Pixel: and there will be some interesting annoucnements soon that we can all look forward to

[18:33] Abdiel Merit: or art, or music

[18:33] CDB Barkley: Does alienation lose meaning?

[18:33] CDB Barkley: ...as hings blur?

[18:33] Abdiel Merit: No, I think it unleashes meaning

[18:33] Isa Goodman: listening with intent Larry

[18:33] Larry Pixel: they contineu to look at voice as a feature

[18:33] Abdiel Merit: It's a "defamiliarization" effect

[18:33] Abdiel Merit: but yes, too much can make you dizzy :)

[18:33] Sariah Chihuly: where do you find alienation in SL learning environments?

[18:33] Isa Goodman: Sweet

[18:33] Larry Pixel: and education can continue to expect islands to cost just $1000

[18:34] Abdiel Merit: Just the plain fact of being here with a bunch of articulate animatins

[18:34] totally Vavoom: or as you become immersed in the object? Be it a piece of music, or art, or an immersive environment/

[18:34] Abdiel Merit: animations

[18:34] Stacy Narayan: Yes Larry, please continue

[18:34] Larry Pixel: they are working to make the land store work for us as it does for non-education buyers

[18:34] Kevin Galbraith: That would be nice, Larry.

[18:35] Sariah Chihuly: That would be good, although we should be careful about chaos.

[18:35] totally Vavoom: i think i like being called an "articulate animation" ;-)

[18:35] Larry Pixel: he gave a very nice keynote on the ways peopel are using SL for educaiton

[18:35] Stacy Narayan: Are poddcasts or other artifacts of the meeting available?

[18:35] Larry Pixel: not a whole lot of new in there, but it is clear that he is paying very cliose attention to what all of us are doing

[18:35] Sariah Chihuly: I think they get a lot of good pr from education happening here.

[18:36] Larry Pixel: thry do indeed, and I think they want to help us be successful

[18:36] Sariah Chihuly: sure beats some of the other publicity they get around salacious issues.

[18:36] totally Vavoom: true

[18:36] Calisto Encinal: The education side balances the other.

[18:36] Larry Pixel: they are workign hard on support issues and call centers

[18:36] Johnny99 Gumshoe: any word on SL going open source?

[18:36] CDB Barkley: Stacy- presentations are being added http://www.nmc.org/events/2006fallregional/presentation_links.shtml

[18:36] Larry Pixel: and much of the issues with the grid are due to the fac that they now have a data cente rin Dallas as well as one in SF

[18:36] CDB Barkley: We are still collecting them

[18:36] Sariah Chihuly: those are important -- especially for my students, who may not be as advanced as those at some of the big u's.

[18:37] CDB Barkley: We will have podcast audio form all keynotes

[18:37] Larry Pixel: IBM announced a partnership with an open-source competitor and will announce a $50 million investment in virstual worlds tomorrow

[18:38] Isa Goodman: Interesting

[18:38] Sariah Chihuly: I can't see the globe that Lyr mentioned -- and I've been looking.

[18:38] Heidi TeeCee: really ... oh my

[18:38] Larry Pixel: http://secondlife.reuters.com/stories/2006/11/09/ibm-accelerates-push-into-3d-virtual-worlds/

[18:38] Sariah Chihuly: Yikes, is that with metaverse?

[18:38] Sariah Chihuly: that could really heat things up.

[18:39] CDB Barkley: Professor, how about your session at San Antonio?

[18:39] CDB Barkley: or Heidi?

[18:39] Johnny99 Gumshoe: ah the smell of panic.... ibm

[18:39] Professor Beliveau: I was impressed with how interestedpeople are in getting involved . . . teachers with hopes and plans

[18:39] Larry Pixel: hehhe

[18:39] CDB Barkley: Can you really buy what is here?

[18:39] Heidi TeeCee: I'm sorry CDB ... checking out that news article

[18:39] Larry Pixel: see uni-verse.org

[18:40] Sariah Chihuly: but it looks like their own thing is just an intranet?

[18:40] Professor Beliveau: but I hear a lot of folks talk of impediments

[18:40] Professor Beliveau: entry into SL is NOT easy

[18:40] Professor Beliveau: Note intuitive

[18:40] Heidi TeeCee: CDB ... what were you referring to?

[18:40] Larry Pixel: they plan to help companies build both intra and external virtual sites

[18:40] Professor Beliveau: LL really needs to clean up the entry process

[18:40] Chianti Carmichael: here here. steep learning curve.

[18:40] Sariah Chihuly: hmmm. but open source?

[18:40] Sariah Chihuly: or will this be another private thing?

[18:41] Professor Beliveau: noobs get dumped into a VERY disorienting place

[18:41] Johnny99 Gumshoe: we should have an OSS platform to deploy our own servers

[18:41] Larry Pixel: One of the things I spoke with Pathfinder about was creating our own orientation area here

[18:41] Professor Beliveau: causes them to dump out of orientation/help islands too fast

[18:41] Larry Pixel: I thinkwe will be able to do that

[18:41] Professor Beliveau: no one but other noobs bouncing off each other

[18:41] Kevin Galbraith: That would be great, larry.

[18:41] Sariah Chihuly: It would be good to have an educational orientation site.

[18:41] Larry Pixel: wouldn;t it

[18:41] Professor Beliveau: SO new teachers, getting in, mention the learning curve

[18:41] Stacy Narayan: That would be a breakthrough

[18:41] Heidi TeeCee: I think that is a great idea Larry ....

[18:41] Larry Pixel: yes

[18:42] Enjay Ellison: Larry, is there any talk by LL of an education grid?

[18:42] Larry Pixel: so what shall we teach them when they ge there?

[18:42] Larry Pixel: get hwere

[18:42] Larry Pixel: here

[18:42] Larry Pixel: hehhe

[18:42] Sariah Chihuly: heh.

[18:42] Larry Pixel: darn

[18:42] Espresso machine : gives a cup to Josephine Finn

[18:42] Professor Beliveau: I don't care as much about a grid as a deivision in LL

[18:42] Sariah Chihuly: yup, for one thing, teach them how to say lol and heh.

[18:42] Johnny99 Gumshoe: who is working on the literacy part to help people combat the addictive dimensions?

[18:42] Professor Beliveau: LL needs an EDU division... not just a person or two

[18:43] Chianti Carmichael: basics, even just how to read

[18:43] Abdiel Merit: Not just notecards and HUDS

[18:43] Sariah Chihuly: and I also don't think a grid is necessary, in fact, some of the value would be lost if you don't have the world to explore.

[18:43] Abdiel Merit: A vote here for making the orientation intensely social

[18:43] Heidi TeeCee: an education grid is an interesting thought

[18:43] Enjay Ellison: have you looked at the available jobs recently? they need everything :)

[18:43] Abdiel Merit: I agree--we need the whole world

[18:43] Sariah Chihuly: having a prop room would be good, having avatar dressing lessons would be good so folks don't have bald spots.

[18:43] CDB Barkley: When do you stop subdividing the world into grids?

[18:43] CDB Barkley: Left hander grids?

[18:43] Johnny99 Gumshoe: people need tools to help interpret how and why they deive pleasure here

[18:43] Abdiel Merit: My best learning in SL has always been in social contexts

[18:43] Kim Chihuly: and some not slutty clothes for the girls - that was a big problem for my students

[18:44] CDB Barkley: Senior Citizen grids?

[18:44] Sariah Chihuly: I think having some mentors would be a good idea, like the general sl ones, but more focused on educational things.

[18:44] Chianti Carmichael: Should be a very simple environment. Not too demanding on video cards.

[18:44] Abdiel Merit: Mentors are a good idea

[18:44] totally Vavoom: mentors came up before, and it really helps

[18:44] Abdiel Merit: A SL buddy system

[18:45] Chianti Carmichael: Some bail because their system is just too slow, which makes learning hard.

[18:45] Larry Pixel: IBM is advocating one giant virtal grid, the 3D equivalent of the internet

[18:45] Heidi TeeCee: yes ... we have talked about mentors before ... great idea

[18:45] Sariah Chihuly: also, having a library of free discussion areas with chairs and stuff where we could just take it and go back to our islands ...

[18:45] totally Vavoom: I took a newbie instructional tech shopping today and it made all the difference to her experience

[18:45] Johnny99 Gumshoe: no one has a problem introducing a medium in school that will be problematic for a percentage of the population?

[18:45] Larry Pixel: but with a browser-based client

[18:45] Carbonel Tigereye: Not sure if this has already been discussed, but are we, as educators, prepared for the inevitable backlash to "adult content" in SL?

[18:45] Abdiel Merit: what isn't problematic for a percentage of students

[18:45] Stacy Narayan: Just like everything important in life, we learn from each other

[18:45] Abdiel Merit: I think we make a mistake by aiming for a uniform experience

[18:46] Kim Chihuly: mentors might be a job the students could aspire to - better than working as a club bouncer

[18:46] Professor Beliveau: Johnny... our students do a lot of stuff they shouldn't do

[18:46] CDB Barkley: really? there is adult content here? ;-)

[18:46] Larry Pixel: lol

[18:46] Chianti Carmichael: lol

[18:46] Carbonel Tigereye must have been mistaken about the adult content.

[18:46] Professor Beliveau: SL gives them a virtual environment that isn't about killing

[18:46] Carbonel Tigereye: :)

[18:46] Abdiel Merit: Blackboard is a lowest common denominator

[18:46] ScubaChris Wollongong is Online

[18:46] Professor Beliveau: slutty dresses maybe

[18:46] Abdiel Merit: and I regret its dominance

[18:46] Sariah Chihuly: I don't know , if our students are adults, then are we as rl educators prepared for the backlash because there is a porn store in town?

[18:46] Johnny99 Gumshoe: not a reason not to address it... embed it into the environment

[18:46] CDB Barkley: rock bottom

[18:46] Professor Beliveau: but no killing

[18:46] Professor Beliveau: and lots of learning.

[18:46] Sariah Chihuly: not to be snarky, but we can't be held responsible for that.

[18:46] Chianti Carmichael: Adult content: These are where lessons about personal choice begin.

[18:47] Carbonel Tigereye: I don't think that is snarky, Sariah.

[18:47] Larry Pixel: So in a bit, when we break up, I have a demo of some new tools to share

[18:47] Carbonel Tigereye: I'm wondering about uptight administrators putting brakes on our ability to experiment.

[18:47] Kim Chihuly: i like that there are areas where they can staget battles - it's an environment that recognize, gets them into the game, and then we can do other more eudcational stuff

[18:47] Larry Pixel: the issue of real time video has been solved

[18:47] Chianti Carmichael: uptight, and uninformed.

[18:47] Carbonel Tigereye thinks the Deleting Online Predators Act is a great example of this.

[18:47] You have offered friendship to Carbonel Tigereye

[18:48] Sariah Chihuly: yes, there will be some of that, but there is always some of that. we have admin opposed to myspace.

[18:48] Sariah Chihuly: with some good reasons, too, just not good enough in my book.

[18:48] Chianti Carmichael: ::nod::

[18:48] Larry Pixel: we can now start and stop video, and change videos on demand, and everyone in the area can experience it in real time

[18:48] Calisto Encinal: Can students be teleported right to a "safe" area for class?

[18:48] Kim Chihuly: cool feature larry

[18:48] Carbonel Tigereye: OK.... I don't want to derail the discussion. Just wanted to toss it out there as something to think about in the long term.

[18:48] totally Vavoom: hey adri!

[18:48] Sariah Chihuly: you mean can we keep all outsiders out?

[18:49] Larry Pixel: you can if you want to be all by yoru self

[18:49] Kim Chihuly: calisto - can you make a slurl for hte area you want them to go to?

[18:49] Sariah Chihuly: probably, but I would rather keep it open and keep it a learning/teaching moment thing.

[18:49] Larry Pixel: it is easy

[18:49] Abdiel Merit is Offline

[18:49] Stacy Narayan: CDC has a presence here, and uses the adult content here as starting points to discuss rehearsed behaviors,

[18:49] Janor Slichter: Calisto, log in to a safe area, yes

[18:49] Larry Pixel: jut keep your island priovate and only let popel in the group by invitation

[18:49] Stacy Narayan: choices, etc

[18:49] Sariah Chihuly: in fact, I think NMC has something like that going on.

[18:49] Sariah Chihuly: if you aren't a member you end up in a moat?

[18:49] CDB Barkley: No, NMC is not private

[18:50] Larry Pixel: it is quasi-private

[18:50] Calisto Encinal: I would just want them to "jump" over the other stuff. They can explore that on their own time.

[18:50] Abdiel Merit is Online

[18:50] Calisto Encinal: Slurl would work.

[18:51] Calisto Encinal: Our campus has the Internet, but while they are in class, I monitor them not surfing to adult areas.

[18:51] Calisto Encinal: Same thing, no?

[18:51] Sariah Chihuly: yes, same thing, although with online/distance learners not so easy.

[18:51] Carbonel Tigereye: Logically, yes, Calisto.

[18:52] CDB Barkley: The more "control" you desire, the more work you end up with in administration of it.

[18:52] Sariah Chihuly: and while you can use some version of monitor if you are in the classroom -- trying to filter in other venues is very hard.

[18:52] Abdiel Merit: I agree with CDB

[18:52] Josephine Finn: there are so many online avenues to porn now, whether they are utilizing the internet for searches or in SL, the bottom line is...they are 18 and over.

[18:52] Carbonel Tigereye: Right.

[18:52] Abdiel Merit: Right

[18:52] Janor Slichter: I'm sure there are ethical implications, but you can arrange to bug your students, too

[18:52] CDB Barkley: Let's give them something more interesting to do ;-)

[18:52] Abdiel Merit: Right

[18:53] Josephine Finn: a few years ago, we were all fighting internet screening software, no?

[18:53] Carbonel Tigereye: I'm not advocating control. Just wondering if we might run into some resistance that interferes with our ability to use virtual worlds in the classroom.

[18:53] Carbonel Tigereye: And, if we do encounter such resistance, do we have a backup plan?

[18:53] Sariah Chihuly: also, if we just aren't interested -- they tend to get the message.

[18:53] Sariah Chihuly: some of us still are.

[18:53] Abdiel Merit: I worry that if we're not careful, we'll end up making all the same mistakes in this world as we do in RL school

[18:53] CDB Barkley: First steps seem efforts to replcate a clasroom- chairs, seats, lecterns...

[18:53] Sariah Chihuly: the libraries in California had to put in filters to keep their funding.

[18:53] Abdiel Merit: spending all our time planning around bad eventualities

[18:54] Josephine Finn: i did hear that.

[18:54] Abdiel Merit: instead of those "better things to do" CDB mentions

[18:54] Sariah Chihuly: I am 100% behind the let's just drop this topic movement I am sensing here. I don't think you can spend your time trying to legislate for the bad apples.

[18:54] Calisto Encinal: RIght. Do you think students are getting desensitized to the "adult" things with all the spam, etc. Can they filter it out?

[18:54] Enjay Ellison: We can teach in PG areas, notify students as to the differences between PG/Mature/unsafe, and demand that content they generate be PG; what they do on their own time is something we can't control.

[18:55] Abdiel Merit: right

[18:55] Carbonel Tigereye: Great. Let's move on.

[18:55] CDB Barkley: So for something "good", Larry has a guest with offerings for us ....

[18:55] Sariah Chihuly: great summation Enjay.

[18:56] Larry Pixel: so one of the issues many of us have been tryign to solve.....

[18:56] Larry Pixel: is how to share video in real time

[18:56] Larry Pixel: how many of you have tried that?

[18:56] Carbonel Tigereye has not tried that.

[18:56] Larry Pixel: typically how it works is that everyone watches video separately

[18:56] Calisto Encinal: Have not tried, but would find it valuable.

[18:57] Larry Pixel: I can be sitting next to you and not see the video

[18:57] Larry Pixel: that you are watching

[18:57] Larry Pixel: so an artist working here in SL has been trying to solve the same issue, but fromt he perspective of an artist

[18:57] Sariah Chihuly: rl is calling, but I'll check in later.

[18:57] William Pharaoh: showing video to two people is very different than showing it to 20

[18:58] Larry Pixel: how can you show your art in exhibition if it cannot be a share dexperience?

[18:58] Larry Pixel: kind of a similar situation to sharing a vidoe with a class and having a discussion

[18:58] Chianti Carmichael: is essential.

[18:59] Larry Pixel: so we talked the artist, who is here tongiht, and asked if she woudl share her solution, and she said sure!

[18:59] Heidi TeeCee: great!

[18:59] William Pharaoh: it's a matter of P.OV. -- literally and figuratively

[18:59] Corwin Carillon: folks ... you may want to stand up from the table to see this

[18:59] Larry Pixel: so for those who are interested, i'll do a demo in a few minutes with the screens behind us by the coffee

[19:00] Larry Pixel: meanwhile, let me thank Abbaca Aoi for her genrosity!

[19:00] CDB Barkley appaluds

[19:00] Chianti Carmichael: My system is terribly slow so I will be able to relate technical challenges.

[19:00] CDB Barkley applauds

[19:00] Abdiel Merit: /applause

[19:00] Abbaca Aoi: most welcome. glad it is of help to you

[19:00] Enjay Ellison claps

[19:00] Heidi TeeCee: thanks!!!

[19:00] Abdiel Merit: /claps

[19:00] Larry Pixel: you'll need to have your video enabled

[19:01] Larry Pixel: and click your play button

[19:01] CDB Barkley: Hey, who turned that on!!!

[19:01] Larry Pixel: when you all can see the Civid Defense video, let me know

[19:14] CDB Barkley: So as we wrap this Buzz.... do we have topics anyone wants for a future session?

[19:14] William Pharaoh: is the looping because of lag or too many viewers?

[19:14] Larry Pixel: there is also an awsome slider viewer that Abbaca created next to the video player

[19:14] Larry Pixel: no looping is a setting

[19:14] Larry Pixel: I'd suggest we turn off our miovie contriols at this point

[19:14] William Pharaoh: I guess it's not looping, but rather multiple starts

[19:14] Larry Pixel: you can play with this one later or the one in the Gonicl

[19:15] Larry Pixel: yes that is the issue

[19:17] Larry Pixel: so I was gong to mention the slideshow -- also for sale for $0

[19:17] Larry Pixel: also self expanatory

[19:17] Abbaca Aoi: slideshow is the best in SL

[19:18] Larry Pixel: has wonderful fades and requires no special perms onthe tecutures

[19:18] Larry Pixel: textures

[19:18] CDB Barkley: that rules

[19:18] Abbaca Aoi: the fades in between slides are pristine

[19:18] Abbaca Aoi: and there are multiple size and other settings

[19:18] Abbaca Aoi: it's very very nice

[19:18] Larry Pixel: yes very nice
