[17:57] Radar Radio: Very nice.

[17:58] Heidi TeeCee is Online

[17:58] CDB Barkley: The NMC Teachers Buzz is starting over in the Amphitheatre of the Quad on Teaching... Click the mini-Map and look for the crowd of green dots!

[17:58] Calisto Encinal is Online

[17:59] Lyr Lobo chuckles

[17:59] Desideria Stockton: i was we have been counted

[17:59] Desideria Stockton: our wee blue dots

[18:00] CDB Barkley: Welcome everyone to the NMC Campus Teachers Buzz

[18:00] CDB Barkley: This is a new meeting spot for us, we like to move around

[18:00] Lyr Lobo: hehe

[18:00] CDB Barkley: For those new, we meet every 2 weeks in SL (usually Mondays)

[18:00] Desideria Stockton: lol

[18:01] Lyr Lobo smiles

[18:01] CDB Barkley: as a place for teachers to gatherm share ideas, talk about teaching in SL

[18:01] CDB Barkley: It was a small idea when we started last August, but we've had some great turnouts for the sessions...

[18:01] CDB Barkley: so thanks to our frequent fliers!

[18:01] CDB Barkley: More info is at: http://www.nmc.org/campus/Teachers_Buzz_Session

[18:02] CDB Barkley: So I have asked once, but how many people are here as part of the TCC conference? And how many is today their first visit to Second Life?

[18:02] CDB Barkley: (this is the audience participation part)

[18:02] Victoria Gloucester: lol

[18:02] Calisto Encinal: Part of conference and frequent Buzz Agitator.

[18:02] CDB Barkley: The TCC is a long running online conference

[18:03] Radar Radio: Not part of the conference and this is not my first time ;-)

[18:03] Bill Friis: And how many have no idea what TCC is?

[18:03] CDB Barkley: http://tcc.kcc.hawaii.edu

[18:03] Vardalek Paine: Oh hi folks I'm Vardalek -- newbie to this but a few weeks in SL

[18:03] Mark Hocken: ditto

[18:03] Desideria Stockton raises hand

[18:03] KJ Hax: First time here...

[18:03] CDB Barkley: Been around for what, 12 years?

[18:03] Farley Scarborough raises his hand to being part of the TCC conference.

[18:03] Heidi TeeCee: Not part of the conference ... I try to come as much as I can

[18:03] Lyr Lobo: yes *smiles*

[18:03] Cordelia Moy: Been in SL since September; participating in TCC

[18:03] CDB Barkley: Their online conference starts in about 2 weeks

[18:03] CDB Barkley: and has hundreds of participants from around the world

[18:04] CDB Barkley: This year, they had an interest in a preconference session on Second Life...

[18:04] CDB Barkley: And today, Lyr and Ilene did at least 2 Ellumiinate sessions as intros for people likely new to SL

[18:04] CDB Barkley: Maybe they are out there on Orientation Island??

[18:04] totally Vavoom is Online

[18:05] CDB Barkley: So....

[18:05] Corwin Carillon: maybe

[18:05] CDB Barkley: The idea we thought might be useful

[18:05] CDB Barkley: would be for some of the people that have been coming to the Buzz sessions or following us on SLED, to share some lessons learned for others entering here as newbies

[18:06] Victoria Gloucester: find a buddy

[18:06] CDB Barkley: Filling up the seats

[18:06] Victoria Gloucester: drain them of all knowledge

[18:06] CDB Barkley: Maybe eveyone is eager for the dance at Boracy follwing this

[18:06] Desideria Stockton: dont sacrifice course objectives for technology; always keep the goals in mind

[18:06] Brit Goode: psychic vampire!

[18:06] Bill Friis: Intellectual vampires.

[18:06] Brit Goode: Ahhhh

[18:06] Brit Goode: that too

[18:06] CDB Barkley: Maybe people can briefly share how they are using SL now....

[18:07] CDB Barkley: Otherwise I have to tell cat jokes

[18:07] Farley Scarborough: hehe

[18:07] Mark Hocken: For education, I use it as a socialization tool for my eCollege students.

[18:07] Sam Beauchamp: What subjects are you all teaching with SL

[18:07] Existential Paine: pocca necklace :-)

[18:07] HVX Silverstar is Online

[18:07] CDB Barkley: "What do cats use to make coffee? A purrcolator."

[18:07] Radar Radio: We're in the midst of a student design competition for residentiall living spaces on campus - designing living 'pods' that represent the cultures of their residence halls.

[18:08] Desideria Stockton: i use SL to teach composition and will be teaching 5 online courses here this semester

[18:08] Desideria Stockton: Brit Lit 1 and 2

[18:08] LoriVonne Lustre: /ao off

[18:08] Desideria Stockton: American lit 1 and 2

[18:08] Mark Hocken: Game design and development

[18:08] Vardalek Paine: ONe of my cultural studies students is doing a reflection paper on education in SL

[18:08] Lyr Lobo: I use it for class projects...demonstrating skills and competencies...prototyping and modeling possible solutions...Software Engineering

[18:08] CDB Barkley: Great!

[18:08] Desideria Stockton: and Women's Studies

[18:08] Brit Goode: i teach law to community college students but as for teaching on SL hmmm?

[18:08] Bill Friis: Instructional Media Design.

[18:08] Desideria Stockton: harvard did it :-) Brit

[18:08] Heidi TeeCee: We have used it in a Psychology class and are starting to create our own environments

[18:08] Max Chatnoir: I'm working on a genetics teaching site.

[18:08] Sam Beauchamp: I teach about distance learning and am looking for some ideas on how to present SL as a tool

[18:08] Brit Goode: tough act to follow!

[18:08] Lyr Lobo grins at Max

[18:09] LoriVonne Lustre: explorations of communities for human service students

[18:09] CDB Barkley: So what would you recommend for a way for teachers to get started without getting overwhelmed?

[18:09] Vardalek Paine: Who said vampire? :)=

[18:09] Desideria Stockton: get connected

[18:09] Desideria Stockton: to good people

[18:09] Desideria Stockton: like here

[18:09] Heidi TeeCee: We have also been introducing faculty to SL in a number of workshops

[18:09] Desideria Stockton: joing SLED

[18:09] LoriVonne Lustre: get in here

[18:09] Sam Beauchamp: I am also concerned about the learning curve for students, any thoughts on best approaches

[18:09] Brit Goode: SLED?

[18:09] LoriVonne Lustre: talk talk talk

[18:09] Bill Friis: Start with a small class.

[18:09] CDB Barkley: Good question Sam

[18:09] Mark Hocken: Trouble is SLED is an information overload.

[18:09] Heidi TeeCee: A pilot is best

[18:09] KJ Hax: amen

[18:09] Victoria Gloucester: students as in what age?

[18:10] Ilene Pratt: The Second Life Educators discussion list - SLED

[18:10] CDB Barkley: If the chat is moving too fast, click the "History" button

[18:10] LoriVonne Lustre: for students a good orientation

[18:10] Brit Goode: tx Ilene

[18:10] CDB Barkley: How are your students taking to the environment?

[18:10] Sam Beauchamp: I teach graduate level, mostly tech savy students, but SL would only be a small portion of the class

[18:10] Heidi TeeCee: We have worked with undergrads and have plans for graduate students in the fall ... also distance-ed students

[18:10] Vardalek Paine: I find that my freshman student does well on his own but also by going around together with me

[18:10] Desideria Stockton: they love it

[18:10] Victoria Gloucester: my suggestion is that you get them in weeks before you require them to actually do a class

[18:11] LoriVonne Lustre: absolutely

[18:11] Desideria Stockton: especiallythe 40 year olds

[18:11] Victoria Gloucester: get them through the prientation off class hours

[18:11] Heidi TeeCee: Yes, students and faculty need an orientation

[18:11] Vardalek Paine: We even went to a Tim HOrton's together to find coffee. He showed me that.

[18:11] CDB Barkley: has anyone gotten hit by a n Update Wednesday?

[18:11] Heidi TeeCee: We have a formal orientation session

[18:11] Victoria Gloucester: in both cases i am involved in the grad students want to run around a bit

[18:11] Victoria Gloucester: change their appearance and kick beach balls

[18:11] Brit Goode: dont they always?

[18:11] LoriVonne Lustre: alright! Just like in real life... go to Timmys

[18:11] Sam Beauchamp: Good points, but most of them are already overwhelmed by workload and life in general. Extra exercises are hard to encourage.

[18:11] Vardalek Paine: I'm also a faculty developer

[18:11] Victoria Gloucester: they have to get that out of their system

[18:11] Heidi TeeCee: no ... we avoid Wednesdays

[18:11] Desideria Stockton: lol

[18:12] Victoria Gloucester: before they can connect with the educational value of MUVEs

[18:12] LoriVonne Lustre: hehehe

[18:12] Desideria Stockton: I may crash

[18:12] Desideria Stockton: if I do, I wish all of you well

[18:12] Desideria Stockton: crashing happens

[18:12] CDB Barkley: What kinds of activies have worked well?

[18:12] LoriVonne Lustre: tata Desi

[18:12] LoriVonne Lustre: that is the way it is

[18:12] Desideria Stockton: so, it is good to be inderstanding

[18:12] Desideria Stockton: for students

[18:12] Desideria Stockton: group activites can suffer because of lag

[18:12] Desideria Stockton: opr because of differnt computers being used

[18:12] Desideria Stockton: like now

[18:13] LoriVonne Lustre: patience is truly a virtue

[18:13] Desideria Stockton: I know i am about to crash

[18:13] Sam Beauchamp: How are adult learners taking to SL?

[18:13] Heidi TeeCee: We have done more of task-based activities but are going to start to look at problem-based learning here

[18:13] Desideria Stockton: and students get fruistrated

[18:13] Sam Beauchamp: Do they have issues with coordination and learning to move around?

[18:13] CDB Barkley: Hey Professor B! Would you care to chat a bit about your 3 week course?

[18:13] Desideria Stockton: frustrated

[18:13] Professor Beliveau: sure CDB

[18:13] Heidi TeeCee: The technology is still challenging

[18:13] CDB Barkley: Maybe we can have one teacher talk abut their SL work in more detail...

[18:13] Professor Beliveau: just tell me what you need

[18:13] CDB Barkley: I've ashed Prof B

[18:14] CDB Barkley: Can you describe the course you did and how it worked out?

[18:14] Ilene Pratt: Sam, I talked to one prof today who said she suggested this to her students and they are scared of SL - grad students!

[18:14] Professor Beliveau: Sure . . now?

[18:14] CDB Barkley: Yep. my fingers are tired

Image:Buzz-tcc 007.jpg

[18:14] Professor Beliveau: Undergraduate course in Field Research Methods in Second Life

[18:14] Professor Beliveau: over 3 week January interm

[18:14] Brit Goode: I'm here beacuse my 15y/o is a WoW adict if I want to communicte with his peers I better get up on 3D sims!

[18:14] Professor Beliveau: spent a few months preparing

[18:15] Professor Beliveau: then taught 3 houyrs per night . . 5days a week, for 3 weeks

[18:15] Professor Beliveau: totally in SL

[18:15] Professor Beliveau: one our lecture and discussion over the readings and field methods

[18:15] Professor Beliveau: one our students presented their own work (resaerzch in SL)

[18:15] Sam Beauchamp: Ilene - my students are interested and excited, but find it hard to have the time to learn a new system and all the ins and outs

[18:15] Jetherik Sands: Being good in WoW, or City of Heroes is always a good idea in dealing with students.

[18:15] Professor Beliveau: one hour them doing field research in SL

[18:16] Lyr Lobo grins and nods at Jetherik

[18:16] Professor Beliveau: I'll send URLs for the syllabus and the studdent blogs.

[18:16] CDB Barkley: Thanks.

[18:16] Bill Friis: Go Beliveau!

[18:16] Victoria Gloucester: yes please

[18:16] Brit Goode: tx prof

[18:16] CDB Barkley: And you are ramping up again?

[18:16] Professor Beliveau: my sl stuff

[18:16] Professor Beliveau: http://slane.bradley.edu/com/faculty/lamoureux/website2/slstuff.html

[18:16] Professor Beliveau: syallbus

[18:16] Professor Beliveau: http://slane.bradley.edu/com/faculty/lamoureux/website2/490/mm490.html

[18:17] Professor Beliveau: QT movie about the clas

[18:17] Professor Beliveau: http://gcc.bradley.edu/students/jterhorst/second%20life/final_piece_web.mov

[18:18] CDB Barkley: Anyone have questions for Prof B?

[18:18] C-Tech F2050 anti grav ship whispers: All systems online

[18:18] CDB Barkley: He was brave to do an entire class in SL

[18:18] Professor Beliveau: splitting it into two c ourses now

[18:18] Professor Beliveau: a three week Intro . to Field Research in SL

[18:18] Radar Radio: What were the biggest issues in the use of SL your students expressed?

[18:18] Jetherik Sands: Did you use any speech tools like Team Speak?

[18:18] Professor Beliveau: then a full semster "Field Research in SL " course

[18:18] Professor Beliveau: Yes

[18:19] Professor Beliveau: the class was taught in audio using teamspeak

[18:19] Professor Beliveau: though the students often typed

[18:19] Professor Beliveau: and I used text chat for oral quizes nightly

[18:19] Professor Beliveau: so that I'd have a record of who got them right.

[18:19] Professor Beliveau: no challenges for the studetns

[18:19] Jetherik Sands: Cool, do you have info at your website about setting up Team Speak. The class I have to develop, I want to go along that lines

[18:19] CDB Barkley: And they all kept blogs too, right?

[18:20] Lyr Lobo chuckles and nods

[18:20] Professor Beliveau: well.. except the one kid whose sister kep ttakikng his computer time at night

[18:20] Professor Beliveau: yes

[18:20] Professor Beliveau: they all kept blogs

[18:20] Professor Beliveau: required

[18:20] Professor Beliveau: big dance with the human subjects protection peopole

[18:20] Vardalek Paine: what kind of blogging and was it integrated into SL?

[18:20] Professor Beliveau: they do not understand either sl or online research

[18:20] Victoria Gloucester: really?

[18:20] Professor Beliveau: not integrated into SL

[18:20] Professor Beliveau: web blogs

[18:20] CDB Barkley: He used a TeamSpeak server we have set up for NMC (http://www.nmc.org/campus/Campus_Audio)

[18:21] Professor Beliveau: I'm not big on SL webhuds

[18:21] Professor Beliveau: yet

[18:21] Radar Radio: what were the IRB complaints?

[18:21] Vardalek Paine: thanks

[18:21] Professor Beliveau: sorry, blog huds.

[18:21] Sam Beauchamp: Did youfeel having the audio was a necessity for making it all work?

[18:21] Victoria Gloucester: tell us more about IRB

[18:21] Jetherik Sands: Can anyone use that server, or do we have to set up our own?

[18:21] Professor Beliveau: IRB started with the notion that each student would have to get separate/uniuqe approval for each project.

[18:21] Professor Beliveau: They are undergrads... in a class....

[18:21] Professor Beliveau: if IRB turned them down, they'd fllunk

[18:21] Professor Beliveau: that doesn't work

[18:22] Professor Beliveau: so I became PI for every project

[18:22] Radar Radio: concerned about avatar rights?

[18:22] Professor Beliveau: and wrote one big gneric app.

[18:22] Professor Beliveau: Yes... boh AVI s and the people behind them

[18:22] Lyr Lobo smiles

[18:22] Professor Beliveau: what if I see you kissing in here?

[18:22] Professor Beliveau: and report that?

[18:22] Bluewave Ogee: you had to get 2 signatures?

[18:22] Professor Beliveau: maybe your RL mate doesn't approve

[18:22] Professor Beliveau: lol

[18:23] Bluewave Ogee: 2 signatures?

[18:23] Professor Beliveau: we got permission from (1) every subject (2) every land owner (30 anyone in any picture we took

[18:23] Lyr Lobo: yes

[18:23] Victoria Gloucester: really?

[18:23] Bluewave Ogee: OMG

[18:23] Jetherik Sands: How long did it take to create your space?

[18:23] CDB Barkley: Lotta work

[18:23] Radar Radio: What a pain

[18:23] Corwin Carillon: this way

[18:23] Professor Beliveau: The students worre the designation "researcher" on their group ID

[18:23] Professor Beliveau: they wore it at all times when doing research

[18:23] Professor Beliveau: our videographer also got permission of each land owner

[18:24] Professor Beliveau: the protocols are available on their blogs

[18:24] Bluewave Ogee: how long did all this IRVB set up take?

[18:24] Professor Beliveau: a semester

[18:24] Professor Beliveau: I started early on it.

[18:24] Professor Beliveau: BUT

[18:25] Professor Beliveau: people at my place don't do online research

[18:25] Professor Beliveau: so it was all new ground for them

[18:25] Radar Radio is Offline

[18:25] Radar Radio is Online

[18:25] Professor Beliveau: I f you are someplace wwhere online r3esearch is common

[18:25] Professor Beliveau: letss toruble.

[18:25] Professor Beliveau: plus, faculty don't do ethnography at my place

[18:25] Professor Beliveau: again.... if your IRB is used to it.... less toruble.

[18:26] CDB Barkley: So... does anyone else want t share a bit more about their SL teaching? Bill Friis? Lyr?

[18:26] Victoria Gloucester: hmmmm

[18:26] Bill Friis: Sounds like they do get SL enough to take it seriously.

[18:26] Professor Beliveau: yes bill... they do see the issues

[18:26] KJ Hax: Go Vic!

[18:26] Lyr Lobo: I love teaching in world and find that I can communicate complex methods very quickly and visually here

[18:27] Lyr Lobo: students can experience and interact with the theory...apply it and problem solve with it...very transformational for them

[18:27] CDB Barkley: What do you say to naysayers who suggest you can do all this in text chat? MUDs?

[18:27] Jetherik Sands: Any examples for English? I can see this for chemistry, physics, and the sciences, but English, a bit harder

[18:28] Lyr Lobo: we tackled several group projects in world, including designing a maze PvP game (capture the flag..with traps) and an amusement park with a series of attractions...

[18:28] Bill Friis: They have not really been here.

[18:28] Lyr Lobo: many jetherik...the English Village

[18:28] Max Chatnoir: Des Stockton has a couple of fabulous Lit sites.

[18:28] Lyr Lobo: uses roleplay and holodecks

[18:28] Existential Paine: Jetherick visit Literature Alive!

[18:28] Lyr Lobo: to draw students into alternative conversational scenes for language studies

[18:28] Jetherik Sands: Cool, thanks, will do that.

[18:28] LoriVonne Lustre: Absolutely... you have to see what Desi is doing

[18:29] CDB Barkley: Desideria you have lots of things going on.. can I pick on you to talk some more?

[18:29] LoriVonne Lustre: I think she crashed CDB

[18:30] CDB Barkley: oi

[18:30] CDB Barkley is reaching for another bad cat joke

[18:30] Corwin Carillon: she is having a lot of lag issues on a borrowed pc i think cdb

[18:30] Dancoyote Antonelli is Online

[18:30] Jetherik Sands: oh, my wife is curious about any setups for chemistry and geology she can visit

[18:30] CDB Barkley: Ahh

[18:30] Lyr Lobo: there are science lands

[18:30] Lyr Lobo: working on chemistry, physics

[18:30] Corwin Carillon: geology is CDB's sweet spot

[18:30] Lyr Lobo grins

[18:30] CDB Barkley: The Science Center Group is a good contact

[18:30] LoriVonne Lustre: Nature is setting up an island

[18:30] CDB Barkley: Find them over near InfoIsland

[18:31] CDB Barkley: Of course there is the NOAA sim

[18:31] Larry Pixel: We have hopes to add some geology here on NMC as well

[18:31] CDB Barkley: Hi larry!

[18:31] Jetherik Sands: thanks. Now maybe I can get her into some gaming!

[18:31] Vardalek Paine: Does this group ever meet in a less, ummmm, lecture-seat setting?

[18:31] Larry Pixel: plans are laid...now looking for time!

[18:31] CDB Barkley: Yes Vardalek

[18:31] CDB Barkley: sometimes we sit in the grass

[18:31] LoriVonne Lustre: Sure... there are many discussion groups

[18:31] CDB Barkley: When we have a lot of people it gets kind of crowded

[18:31] Ilene Pratt: And sometimes on floating cushions

[18:32] CDB Barkley: yes, the cushions are nice

[18:32] LoriVonne Lustre: there are a goup of us that get together every Thursday on our land in Bam

[18:32] Larry Pixel: I thnk this might be the first time it has met in a space like this

[18:32] Lyr Lobo: often around a campfire

[18:32] Lyr Lobo grins and nods at Larry

[18:32] LoriVonne Lustre: :-)

[18:32] CDB Barkley: and marshmallows burning

[18:32] Larry Pixel: :)

[18:32] CDB Barkley: Thge least used place on NMC is the classroom with seats in rows

[18:32] Farley Scarborough: Jetherik, here is a great article Corwin wrote about an English composition class in SL: http://www.nmc.org/sl/2007/01/23/teachers-buzz-jan-22-composing-second-life-with-bryan-mnemonic-and-ali-andrews/

[18:32] Max Chatnoir: There's a good organic chem site at Bradley ... ? Sorry, I'm blanking on the name. Anybody know/

[18:33] Vardalek Paine: right on thanks -- this is very cool

[18:33] KJ Hax: There are educator socials at the ISTE SkyPark every Thursday night @ 6pm SLT...

[18:33] KJ Hax: Usually quite crowded!

[18:33] KJ Hax: Everyone's welcome!

[18:33] CDB Barkley: It is a challenge to keep up on it all- any suggestions the veterans have?

[18:33] Ilene Pratt: And the ISTE people are always generating ideas at those socials.

[18:34] Jetherik Sands: Thanks Farley

[18:34] Lyr Lobo: I keep notes...*laughs* and categorize places and learning opportunities

[18:34] Farley Scarborough: Sure Jetherik... you can click that link in History

[18:34] Heidi TeeCee: The SLED group is hard to keep up with ... yes, I also try to keep notes ...

[18:34] Lyr Lobo: oh so true, Heidi

[18:35] Bill Friis: We need to hire a full timer to keep a list.

[18:35] Lyr Lobo laughs and nods

[18:35] Heidi TeeCee: The NMC Educators group is more intimate

[18:35] Lyr Lobo: and focused

[18:35] totally Vavoom: the reason it's hard to keep up with SLED is taht it's so active, which is actually a good thing :-)

[18:35] Lyr Lobo: yes, very true

[18:35] Heidi TeeCee: and easier ... yes ...it seems easier for me to manage

[18:36] KJ Hax: Question all...do you think it would make sense to suggest splitting SLED up into smaller lists?

[18:36] KJ Hax: My digests sit in my box

[18:36] Victoria Gloucester: SLED is overwhelming

[18:36] KJ Hax: and makem e feel guilty

[18:36] KJ Hax: for not readiong!

[18:36] Lyr Lobo: well I receive 5 lists....they all start spawning like mad

[18:36] Corwin Carillon: the teaching lists are splitting up

[18:36] CDB Barkley: An age old problem with listservs

[18:36] Corwin Carillon: there is a languages one

[18:36] Corwin Carillon: a games in SL one

[18:37] Ellie Brewster: Filters.... filters are our friends

[18:37] Lyr Lobo: I think that is ok to miss a few things...and revisit them when I have time for them *grins*

[18:37] Bill Friis: But I learn so much from SLET.

[18:37] Ilene Pratt: I like it all together in one big discussion

[18:37] Bill Friis: D

[18:37] Corwin Carillon: agreer lyr

[18:37] KJ Hax: The archives do help...

[18:37] Max Chatnoir: Organic Chem is at Bradley Science Center: Eduisland II, Eduisland II (195, 171, 22)

[18:37] Lyr Lobo: I do too..but the ability to absorb it...helps *grins*

[18:37] CDB Barkley: Thanks Max

[18:37] Calisto Encinal: What is the languages one, Corwin?

[18:37] Lyr Lobo thanks Max

[18:37] Corwin Carillon: will have to check ... don't have it to hand ..

[18:38] Calisto Encinal: k

[18:38] Corwin Carillon: but Fire Centaur would know I think

[18:38] Corwin Carillon: or Baldric Commons

[18:38] CDB Barkley: If I could get a Third Life to do the work for my First Life, I'd have time to put into Second Life!

[18:38] Corwin Carillon: lol

[18:38] Lyr Lobo: English Village is one... feel welcome to join the English Village site and visit their sim

[18:38] Calisto Encinal: lol...no kidding, I'm in two meetings right now!

[18:38] Victoria Gloucester: There is Gaming and Learning in Second Life

[18:38] Victoria Gloucester: also

[18:38] Victoria Gloucester: you can join the google group

[18:38] CDB Barkley: So.. anyone got some teaching stories to share? we'd like to hear more about the experiences of active teachers....

[18:39] Heidi TeeCee: I have just seen a site on weather which is cool.

[18:39] Mark Hocken: NOAA Island

[18:39] Professor Beliveau: my students brought a land mine to class.

[18:39] KJ Hax: One of my colleagues at Walden had an experience recently inSL...

[18:39] Professor Beliveau: We used it during oral quizes

[18:39] KJ Hax: She is teaching in the grad program, MSITC

[18:39] Professor Beliveau: two misses and you get blown up

[18:39] Ellie Brewster: Today I deleted the floor of our classroom. We're 700 meters up.

[18:39] KJ Hax: She invited the entire cohort

[18:39] CDB Barkley: Why Ellie?

[18:39] KJ Hax: 10 said yes

[18:40] KJ Hax: 7 signed up

[18:40] Lyr Lobo: aww Ellie.... I lock mine down for that very reason

[18:40] totally Vavoom: Mine really liked finding gurns and other arms for some reason!

[18:40] Jetherik Sands: hehe. Probably to get the attention of here students

[18:40] KJ Hax: One made it, I think.

[18:40] Ellie Brewster: accident. bloloper.

[18:40] Lyr Lobo: so easy to do

[18:40] KJ Hax: Exis, am I ageting this right?

[18:40] CDB Barkley: Ahh, I've done that

[18:40] CDB Barkley: Taken out entire sides of buildings

[18:40] KJ Hax: Existential, hello...do you read...over?

[18:40] Ellie Brewster: wakes them right up

[18:40] Farley Scarborough smiles

[18:41] Heidi TeeCee: that is too funny

[18:41] CDB Barkley: How many here have tried the voice beta?

[18:41] Bluewave Ogee: Have you ever had students who just feel like they're getting left behind? Anyone?

[18:41] Lyr Lobo laughs

[18:41] Ellie Brewster: i have

[18:41] Ilene Pratt: I have!

[18:41] Corwin Carillon: did you hand out parachutes Ellie?

[18:41] Heidi TeeCee: I have

[18:41] Brett Bjornson: I have

[18:41] Jetherik Sands: Hi KJ, we do read.

[18:41] Lyr Lobo raises a hand

[18:41] Zana Kohime: I have

[18:41] CDB Barkley: What do you think of voice in SL?

[18:41] totally Vavoom: I slipped and fell the day I was supposed to ^%^&&**(&%%^^!!!!

[18:41] Lyr Lobo: loved it... shared it with my students...

[18:41] CDB Barkley: How will it change communciation

[18:41] Farley Scarborough has tried the voice beta

[18:41] Lyr Lobo: aww Totally

[18:41] Brett Bjornson: I think it will ad a much-needed component

[18:41] Zana Kohime: I thought it was great.

[18:41] Heidi TeeCee: I think it is great for educators but I wonder how it will change the dynamics in SL

[18:41] BlueWings Hayek: How will it change literacy

[18:42] totally Vavoom: yeah, hoping I'll get another shot at it now that I'm back at a computer :-)

[18:42] Ilene Pratt: I think some won't get a chance to talk - just like in real life. ;)

[18:42] Lyr Lobo: well it increases one type of interaction, but a lot of detail is missed when using voice

[18:42] Lyr Lobo nods at Ilene

[18:42] Corwin Carillon: it will be interesting to see voice .. and sims that have it and those that don

[18:42] Corwin Carillon: don't

[18:42] Mark Hocken: Yes, it could be very constraining with a low of the social exploration in S:

[18:42] Victoria Gloucester: there is a group of educators who have gotten together about 6 times so far to specifically discuss voice in sl

[18:42] Heidi TeeCee: Some people don't want others to know who they are

[18:42] totally Vavoom: how does it correlate with the physical identity of the avatar?

[18:42] Ellie Brewster: you can always require that they do work together in chat, no voice

[18:42] Corwin Carillon: the voice can be disguised

[18:42] Heidi TeeCee: That is what I mean totally Vavoom

[18:42] Victoria Gloucester: Veritas Variscan hosts the group and the meetings

[18:42] Lyr Lobo: let the tool fit the job

[18:42] Corwin Carillon: you can choose

[18:43] Lyr Lobo: yes

[18:43] Lyr Lobo: and the people who use it

[18:43] LoriVonne Lustre: I like the way chat works

[18:43] Professor Beliveau: no matter how much I used voice. my students often preferred chat

[18:43] Bluewave Ogee: I thot Lindens said no disguise yet..

[18:43] Lyr Lobo: yes

[18:43] Jetherik Sands: I forget where I read, but about 10% of your audience will participate, and the rest just lurk, but the lurker still get something out of it (don't quote me on the numbers, but I am close to the original)

[18:43] Lyr Lobo: a written record is so easy to revisit

[18:43] Heidi TeeCee: yes but you wonder how the dynamic will change if everyone is using voice and one person is not

[18:43] totally Vavoom: I agree Heidi, and it could also be a little disconcerting if the avatar was a different gender , I suspect

[18:43] LoriVonne Lustre: and I like the multiple threads at one time

[18:43] Corwin Carillon: yes

[18:43] KJ Hax: There are tools to change your voice I've heard

[18:43] Heidi TeeCee: definitely ... that is exactly what I was thinking

[18:43] KJ Hax: anyone use them?

[18:43] CDB Barkley: Yes chat can be info rich

[18:44] Lyr Lobo: multichannel communication is so much easier by text

[18:44] Walter Witte: in a group this size how would you tell which avi is talking?

[18:44] Ellie Brewster: My mac hasn't worked well in voice, I can talk but not hear. Like in real life.

[18:44] LoriVonne Lustre: it is like the windmilling converations of the deaf community

[18:44] Lyr Lobo: it is spatialized

[18:44] Pablo Paz: Did anyone experience any technical difficulties with the voice chat? did SL crash more often?

[18:44] Ilene Pratt: You have little green squiggles over your head when you are talking

[18:44] Lyr Lobo: you hear voices move around you..and get feedback over their heads

[18:44] Bluewave Ogee: And Lindens said no lips synch yet either because their beta test showed we rely too much on minute facial movements & since SL can't deliver, better not to disappoint

[18:44] CDB Barkley: The voice capability seemed to come and go w/o pattern

[18:44] Heidi TeeCee: We had some problems with the group I was with

[18:45] LoriVonne Lustre: I have been at the voice discussions

[18:45] CDB Barkley: yes, you get crisp audio and no lip movement

[18:45] Brett Bjornson: We need a voice baton - when you have it you can speak

[18:45] Zana Kohime: There was feedback. But the system didn't crash.

[18:45] Brett Bjornson: \Then you pass it when done to another

[18:45] Lyr Lobo: yes, it was not stable, but it was impressive when it worked...I would use it with students...

[18:45] Ellie Brewster: Somebody has made one of those

[18:45] CDB Barkley: The spatial quality was astounding

[18:45] LoriVonne Lustre: there are those who are opposed as they are concerned about how the social dynamic will change

[18:45] Walter Witte: sounds very ;lor of the flies', bret

[18:45] Lyr Lobo: virtual office hours, collaborative projects where our hands are busy

[18:45] Corwin Carillon: we will have to learn to become proficient in the simultanours use of both ... this is already happening in online facilitation

[18:45] Heidi TeeCee: Yes, sometimes people were talking so much it was hard to set something in there

[18:45] Corwin Carillon: people on one or the other medium and people in both all at same time

[18:45] Corwin Carillon: and have to bridge

[18:45] LoriVonne Lustre: I already use voice and chat in Elluminate

[18:46] Brett Bjornson: In a large group, you need some convention to keep things from going wild

[18:46] KJ Hax: EXACTLY

[18:46] Ilene Pratt: It'll be like listening to your instructor in class and sending IMs to your class mates ;)

[18:46] Heidi TeeCee: yes, I totally agree

[18:46] KJ Hax: What are people using?

[18:46] Heidi TeeCee: or all talking at the same time!

[18:46] CDB Barkley: But you never have complete "control"

[18:46] KJ Hax: Control isn't the issue...

[18:46] Brett Bjornson: nope

[18:46] KJ Hax: Engagement is....

[18:46] LoriVonne Lustre: who's issue is the control?

[18:46] CDB Barkley: true

[18:46] Lyr Lobo: effective communication, too

[18:46] HVX Silverstar: I'm trying Ventrillo

[18:46] LoriVonne Lustre: very true Lyr

[18:47] Lyr Lobo: I like the diverse ways in which we can communicate simultaneously

[18:47] LoriVonne Lustre: I think voice will be another tool

[18:47] Jetherik Sands: Which one is better - Ventrillo or Teamspeak - or just about the same?

[18:47] Heidi TeeCee: I wonder with the technology challenges now, will it just add to the issues

[18:47] Corwin Carillon: yes ... as Lyr said before .. use depends on purpose/needs for specific tasks

[18:47] Lyr Lobo smiles and nods at LoriVonne

[18:47] Brett Bjornson: Voice and equity will be an issue

[18:47] LoriVonne Lustre: :-)

[18:47] CDB Barkley: voice and voice-nots

[18:47] Brett Bjornson: Some won't have it, some will - what to do?

[18:48] Lyr Lobo: they are a little different... some prefer Teamspeak for larger gatherings

[18:48] CDB Barkley: one can always type

[18:48] Lyr Lobo: Ventrillo is great for 10-15 person chats

[18:48] Heidi TeeCee: that is true ...the have and have nots ... there is still an issue

[18:48] Corwin Carillon: Brett... i have to run them in both text and voice simulatenously all the time to meet diff access needs

[18:48] Brett Bjornson: at least now, we all have the same capability to communicate

[18:48] totally Vavoom: but it will also bring into play classroom like issues of the shy or reticent ones not speaking up I think

[18:48] totally Vavoom: with chat, they don't have athat much of an issue contributing

[18:48] Bill Friis: And trying to follow chat and voice at the same time. Oy.

[18:48] Heidi TeeCee: yes, I agree totally Vavoom

[18:48] Corwin Carillon: you need at least 2 facilitators bill ...

[18:48] Lyr Lobo grins

[18:48] Vardalek Paine: How do we all have the same ability with chat?

[18:49] Ilene Pratt: I've got a prof with severe carpal tunnel syndrome who can't handle typing. Voice might enable him to enjoy SL

[18:49] Corwin Carillon: on my own is like imposs

[18:49] HVX Silverstar: I like Ventrillo-- a lot of students are used to it from using it in games (WOW)

[18:49] Heidi TeeCee: well, our students can probably follow ok :-)

[18:49] Lyr Lobo nods at HVX

[18:49] Vardalek Paine: I mean, I type real fast but what about someont with broken finger

[18:49] Ellie Brewster: Whichh brings us back to disability and SL

[18:49] CDB Barkley: or clumsy paws

[18:49] Vardalek Paine: ore one-handed Iain, my friend

[18:49] Bill Friis: Some folks do not type much.

[18:49] Lyr Lobo: also we do tasks in world that require us to focus and use manual dexterity

[18:49] Victoria Gloucester: http://web.mac.com/cjsdpars/iWeb/Victoriagloucester/Blog/C2677BC4-D908-4FA0-BA10-727C8D6EB43B.html

[18:49] Lyr Lobo: while sharing information

[18:49] Jetherik Sands: Or a cat that walks on the keyboard....

[18:49] Victoria Gloucester: the last comment on this blog post is interesting

[18:49] Heidi TeeCee: yes, SL is a problem for the visually imparied

[18:49] Vardalek Paine: finally a cat joke

[18:50] Bluewave Ogee: I've heasrd a number of deaf & handicapped SL citizens really worried about Voice. right now, they "hear" as well as everyone else.

[18:50] Victoria Gloucester: different perspective on voice

[18:50] Lyr Lobo smiles

[18:50] Corwin Carillon: there is speech to text like Dragon Naturally speaking

[18:50] Victoria Gloucester: the 4th person to comment

[18:50] LoriVonne Lustre: but voice will be a problem for the deaf users

[18:50] Brett Bjornson: my cat bats at the SL screen!

[18:50] Brett Bjornson: he like CDB for some reason...

[18:50] Corwin Carillon: it will Lori ...

[18:50] Lyr Lobo: yes I had a deaf student last term

[18:50] Bill Friis: hehe

[18:50] Heidi TeeCee: the disability issue is one that we all will have to face one day

[18:50] Corwin Carillon: something we need to be more conscious of ...

[18:51] Lyr Lobo: it was a problem in the classroom, too, requiring me to slow down during the brainstorming sessions..I wore two interpreters out

[18:51] Bluewave Ogee: what about SL interpreters?

[18:51] Vardalek Paine: Does anyone work on Universal Instructional Design in SL

[18:51] CDB Barkley: hah!

[18:51] Jetherik Sands: Heheh, yeah, I have worn out a few interperters as well.

[18:51] Lyr Lobo: hehe well interpreters often do not know our subject matter

[18:51] Heidi TeeCee: as far as I know SL is not compliant

[18:51] Brett Bjornson: Wouldn't it be cool if text chat could be run through speech synthesis and broadcast as speech in real time?

[18:51] CDB Barkley: Tell us more about UID?

[18:51] Lyr Lobo: so they work very hard to try to interpret what we say

[18:51] Victoria Gloucester: that is what the post says

[18:51] CDB Barkley: " Universal Instructional Design"?

[18:51] CDB Barkley: oh

[18:52] LoriVonne Lustre: but there are lots of peoplewith disabilities in SL

[18:52] Vardalek Paine: I taught a course that included visual culture to a blind student -- or rather she learned it and well!!

[18:52] Bluewave Ogee: At my school, every officla web page MUST be compliant

[18:52] Victoria Gloucester: the last comment on that blog post

[18:52] LoriVonne Lustre: they are making their own realities here

[18:52] Jetherik Sands: Brett, that time is coming actually with real time synthesis. The military has one that works on a palm piliot that is being betad in IRaq

[18:52] CDB Barkley: I had to tutor a blind student in geology, lots of describing things that were 3D

[18:52] Heidi TeeCee: at our university also ... SL has just been a trial

[18:52] Brett Bjornson: It might solve some issues

[18:52] HVX Silverstar: ours too... exploring teaching options

[18:53] Lyr Lobo nods at CDB

[18:53] CDB Barkley: Well, its beena good flow of conversation.. want to make sure we've gotten some info for the TCC participants

[18:53] CDB Barkley: Are there any questions the people new to SL might have before we wrap up?

[18:54] Vardalek Paine: how long does it take to learn to build things

[18:54] CDB Barkley: or do you want more really bad cat jokes?

[18:54] Lyr Lobo: it is fast,Vardalek...but building things well can take a while

[18:54] HVX Silverstar: This isn't on topic... but I was wondering if NMC is testing the voice beta

[18:54] Lyr Lobo: *grins* depends on what you rae making

[18:54] Brett Bjornson: A minute to learn, a lifetime to master!

[18:54] CDB Barkley: But one does not need to build....

[18:54] Lyr Lobo chuckles and nods

[18:54] HVX Silverstar: as a group

[18:54] Vardalek Paine: :)

[18:54] CDB Barkley: buy?

[18:54] ScubaChris Wollongong is Online

[18:54] CDB Barkley: borrow?

[18:54] Corwin Carillon: have tested on the beta grid HVX

[18:54] Bluewave Ogee: Helpful would be to go to great lengths to make sure your classes & worksghops in SL are announceed widely and in advance,. Best way to learn is to watch you guys doing it!

[18:54] totally Vavoom: sigh, can't build to save my life

[18:54] Jetherik Sands: A cat walks into a bar and... Never mind.

[18:54] LoriVonne Lustre: shopping is good

[18:54] Heidi TeeCee: yes, there is a lot to explore here without building

[18:54] Vardalek Paine: borrow -- I'm poor

[18:54] Lyr Lobo: my students build... why not let them explore and use their creativity?

[18:55] Vardalek Paine: yeah good one Lyr

[18:55] CDB Barkley says "What do you call a cat that lives in an igloo? An eskimew"

[18:55] Vardalek Paine: thanks everyone for being here !

[18:55] Lyr Lobo laughs

[18:55] Brett Bjornson: Lots of freebies at Yadni's Junkard and other places

[18:55] CDB Barkley: Thanks for coming!

[18:55] CDB Barkley: We ave some freebies too, right Lyr?

[18:55] Ilene Pratt: Thanks, CDB!

[18:55] Ellie Brewster: thanks for doing this, guys

[18:55] HVX Silverstar: thanks for the inspiration

[18:55] Bill Friis: Adios.

[18:55] Jetherik Sands: Thanks for having us.

[18:55] Max Chatnoir: Thanks, CDB

[18:55] LoriVonne Lustre: thanks for the invite CDB

[18:55] CDB Barkley: Corwin, what's next?

[18:58] CDB Barkley: the cat URLs are flowing strong

[18:58] AnaisJung Rau: Terilliu, I'm not teaching in SL yet. I want to start with building a community of educators

[18:58] Brett Bjornson: GTG - thanks all!
