SLED Legitimacy Transcript
From NMC-Campus
[edit] Second Life Educators Panel Session Transcript Pt 1 of 2
- October 18, 2006
- NMC Campus : Woolsey Hall
- part of the Impact of Digital Media Symposium
- "Are We Playing Games? Finding Legitimacy in the Academy"
Second Life is filled with brilliant proof-of-concept trials by educators working alone, unfunded and often after hours. Only a few academic efforts are official, integrated and well funded. Why is that? What keeps the mainstream IT folks at bay and banishes early adopters to the fringe of “game studies?” This panel will define the legitimacy gap, explore how it might be breached and go on to discuss what teaching in Second Life could look like with broad acceptance. How will students use streaming 3D when navigating an avatar is as common as logging in to MySpace?- Terry Beaubois of Montana State taught architecture in SL last Fall
- Aline Click at NIU has taught in world and presents on SL regularly
- Josephine Dorado and Dan Winckler, co-directors of Kids Connect
- Jeremy Kemp moderator, keeps Second Life's official education wiki, working on SLoodle hybrid LMS
- Sarah "Intellagirl" Robbins from Ball State is teaching a rhetoric class
- Sharon Tettegah with UIUC is running an AERA symposium on SL in April in Chicago
- "Are We Playing Games? Finding Legitimacy in the Academy"

[12:09] Li Xi: /anyone else losing audio?
[12:09] CDB Barkley: Audio seems fine here
[12:09] totally Vavoom: mine's turned all the way up to be able to hear well
[12:09] CDB Barkley: We are recording
[12:09] Dudeney Ge: Finefor me too
[12:09] Duck Peck: fine for me too
[12:10] Larry Pixel: mine is at 50%
[12:10] Larry Pixel: sounds clear
[12:10] CDB Barkley: Feel free to chat in your questions?
[12:12] Fleep Tuque: Were some of your funds used to pay other "residents" of SL to build content on your islands, or did you and your staff provide all of the building/scripting/etc?
[12:12] Larry Pixel: I describe our activities as exploring collaboration and knowledge sharing in "3-D virtual spaces"
[12:12] Larry Pixel: I do not recommend the phrase "buy an island in SL"
[12:13] Fleep Tuque: And if you hired content builders, was that built into your grant funding proposal? - Thanks.
[12:13] Fleep Tuque: Thanks!
[12:14] Professor Beliveau: also, please repeat who you are from time to time
[12:14] Duck Peck: What's are the expectations for University IT departments when it comes to supporting SL as an application? Harvard's requirements for "The Court of Public Opinion" include that the student should be able to access SL on their personal machines.
[12:15] Duck Peck: Do you have computer labs specialized for SL usage?
[12:15] totally Vavoom: we are exploring it with a first year seminar class, and yes, we've come to the conclusion that students need to ahve the appropriate hardware/software on their personal machines
[12:16] In Kenzo gave you ccremixvitaintegra.
[12:16] Duck Peck: Haha, thanks!
[12:16] totally Vavoom: I think one of the issues with a campus lab is keeping up with the upgrades
[12:16] Fleep Tuque: Indeed, video cards in most computer labs do not meet the minimum requirements for SL.
[12:17] Larry Pixel: I hadn't thought about that....Black Wednesday's woudl be an issue
[12:17] Dagmar Kojishi: How did you deal with skepticism from colleagues about the usefulness of SL, in light of the fact that a lot of faculty still don't really believe "regular online" classes are "as good"? Did you run into that?
[12:17] Duck Peck: indeed
[12:17] Larry Pixel: Wow!! What a fantastic story!
[12:17] totally Vavoom: or at univesities that emphasize f2f learning as their primary edge, faculty resistance is high as well
[12:18] Professor Beliveau: I'm getting to hand pick my students for my first trial in january ... 8 limit (plus one as a videographer), multimedia majors only, by application that requires tech savy and SL experience
[12:18] Duck Peck: makes sense
[12:18] Zizou Zetkin is Online
[12:18] Larry Pixel: lol
[12:18] Puglet Dancer: What is your website address and can others visit your island?
[12:18] Fleep Tuque: Good question!
[12:19] Dudeney Ge: Action!
[12:19] Gauisus Speculaas: ae you recording any of this as perhaps a podcasted element?
[12:19] CDB Barkley: http://www.intellagirl.com
[12:19] CDB Barkley: Yes we are recording
[12:19] Fleep Tuque: Middletown Island
[12:19] Duck Peck: Thanks!
[12:19] CDB Barkley: applause
[12:19] Fleep Tuque: Thank you! Excellent presentation!

[12:30] Larry Pixel: Access the audio from this panel with your music control
[12:31] Fleep Tuque: You mentioned that your students were required to build in some assessment as part of their projects, can you describe some of those tools? We have some concerns about measuring the effectiveness of using SL as a teaching tool.
[12:33] Gauisus Speculaas: Do you think there'll ever be something like the teen grid but rather the "Educational Grid?"
[12:34] Eve Uramen: thank you
[12:34] CDB Barkley: One of those ;-)
[12:34] Eve Uramen: how can I use the phone
[12:34] Zizou Zetkin is Offline
[12:34] Dagmar Kojishi: I'm still not sure I understand what the problem was? Concerns about loss of IP? How could the privacy of students be compromised? (not doubting, but inquring.)
[12:34] Larry Pixel: Send questions via chat
[12:35] Fleep Tuque: Thank you! :)
[12:36] Zizou Zetkin is Online

[12:39] Zizou Zetkin is Online
[12:39] Gauisus Speculaas: I'm hearing about adults in the teen grid--did you that through a special dispensation from Linden Labs? Can you speak to the process by which you acquired that? ( question for when you get to q&a:)
[12:41] CDB Barkley: Was he doing this on his own?
[12:41] Larry Pixel: to get onthe Teen Grid, I think you need a backgroudn check and a reason to be there
[12:41] Zizou Zetkin is Offline
[12:42] Zizou Zetkin is Online

[12:48] Walter Witte is Online
[12:49] Fleep Tuque: Since this was a collaborative environment, did you find that the mechanics of navigating SL, the interface and etc., distracted from the primary purpose of your project in any significant way?
[12:50] Fleep Tuque: *laugh* It is! =)
[12:51] CDB Barkley: "teen grid is violent" ???
[12:51] Intellagirl Tully: it's rough over there!
[12:51] Watsnu Pussycat: wow
[12:51] CDB Barkley: wow, I was naive
[12:51] Milosun Czervik: they can't have sex... hence...

[13:04] Milosun Czervik: it's not easy to impress a full-on administrator.
[13:05] Larry Pixel: you don;t need much, but some connection to Rl is helpful
[13:05] Fleep Tuque: Symbolic representations, I can see how that would help people identify what you are doing.
[13:05] Milosun Czervik: great way to characterize it.
[13:05] Professor Beliveau: Isn't it useful, in certain class situations, helpful to be able to "close off" the group from wandering outsiders? And don't built spaces help with that?
[13:05] Intellagirl Tully: and it established a sigature for your campus
[13:05] Larry Pixel: we did that here on NMC Campus....for example, we rarely use these classrooms, but they are very importnat to have here
[13:05] Larry Pixel: having a Library is imporant
[13:06] Larry Pixel: these are all connecitons that peole can hang their hat one
