[14:11] CDB Barkley: Fly over the mountain towards the sun

[14:12] Larry Pixel: Are their questions?

[14:12] CDB Barkley: Questions about the model?

[14:12] Dagmar Kojishi: This is probably in the press release, but does this double, triple what you have now?

[14:13] Davee Commerce: when do you expect to complete it?

[14:13] Larry Pixel: triple

[14:13] Larry Pixel: but with a lot more park land

[14:14] Goat Varga: Hello everyone...this is Kathleen and Eric from LCM

[14:14] Larry Pixel: OK let's do that

[14:14] Dagmar Kojishi: How soon will you start offering activities after the build is finished?

[14:14] Hiro Pendragon: Sure, Drew

[14:15] Hiro Pendragon: The idea of the holodeck is what we refer to as a "mutable space".

[14:15] Hiro Pendragon: This is a multi-purpose space that can be reused with different setups, depending on the needs of an event or sohwcase, etc.

[14:15] Hiro Pendragon: As the name implies, it will be scripted so that it can be changed on-the-fly

[14:15] Hiro Pendragon: Entire setups will be pre-built and then available later on.

[14:16] Hiro Pendragon: All in all, it increases the usability and flexibility of the campus to host a variety of types of events, and not pressure the need to do additional building later.

[14:16] Hiro Pendragon: This not just is the contents of the room, but the room itself.

[14:16] Hiro Pendragon: One event may need an open space, the other the interior of an office.

[14:16] Hiro Pendragon: etc.

[14:17] Dagmar Kojishi: How much change will occur in the existing sim?

[14:17] Shukran Fahid: larry

[14:19] Walter Witte is Online

[14:19] Shukran Fahid: larry

[14:19] Shukran Fahid: did u mention the submarine?

[14:20] Shukran Fahid: or is that still a secret?

[14:20] Shukran Fahid: :D

[14:20] Larry Pixel: no secrets any more!

[14:20] Shukran Fahid: part of the life science area will have a sub tour

[14:21] Shukran Fahid: that will investigate various aquatic lants

[14:21] Shukran Fahid: and rock strata for the geologist

[14:21] Shukran Fahid: plants=lants

[14:22] Shukran Fahid: also in that quadrent of the sim the water will be above the water elevations of the surrounding sims

[14:23] Shukran Fahid: about seven weeks....

[14:23] Shukran Fahid: there u go

[14:23] ChuckNorris Mission is Offline

[14:24] Porterhouse Dobbs: How many prims does something like this take?

[14:24] Shukran Fahid: :D\

[14:24] Porterhouse Dobbs: Both/either

[14:24] Shukran Fahid: we have managed to the whole thing in 5 prims

[14:24] Shukran Fahid: :)

[14:25] Shukran Fahid: jk

[14:25] Ninmah Ash: haha

[14:25] Shukran Fahid: the model is about 250

[14:25] Porterhouse Dobbs: Impressive

[14:25] Shukran Fahid: and the rl will be about 20k

[14:25] Shukran Fahid: plus or minus

[14:25] Multi Gadget v1.49.3 by Timeless Prototype

[14:25] Shukran Fahid: funny, funny...im laffin! bo

[14:26] Shukran Fahid: and twiast

[14:26] Shukran Fahid: hey patch

[14:26] Porterhouse Dobbs: Really impressive

[14:26] Ninmah Ash: the model is lovely -- nice work

[14:26] Shukran Fahid: welcome ....patch is late but here

[14:26] Shukran Fahid: Thank You!

[14:27] Shukran Fahid: how do you mean dag?

[14:28] Shukran Fahid: thats definitly for you larry

[14:28] Eric Seversky: Hi Larry, I'm the Director of New Media for LCM. We're working with you

[14:29] Eric Seversky: and glad to see the build

[14:29] Larry Pixel: Bro!

[14:29] Jared Pixel: Very nice

[14:29] Larry Pixel: Hey Jared!

[14:29] Ninmah Ash: hiya Jared

[14:29] Jared Pixel: Hello Dr. Pixel

[14:29] Maggie Marat: Hey Patch thanks for the couch LOL

[14:29] Magda Voss: wow, nice, I'm a little underdressed for the occasion !

[14:29] Magda Voss: what are the ideas for context...for story..here ?

[14:30] Larry Pixel: In what way...for a press story, or for the island?

[14:30] Larry Pixel: cross media?

[14:31] Magda Voss: a scenario, perhaps something classic, with archetypes.

[14:31] property Resistance: Larry, yes, cross media presentation and integration of the content, so it is not only accessible via SL and the content of external sources is accessible wide scale in here :)

[14:31] Larry Pixel: Ahh....well we have several levels of that planned, but the basic theme is a real campus.....realdisciplines, real learning

[14:32] property Resistance: like database links, chat system convergences etc

[14:32] Larry Pixel: a place to experiement with interaction and knowledge sharing

[14:32] Magda Voss: learning by visiting spaces?

[14:32] property Resistance: Very nice, thank you :)

[14:32] Larry Pixel: oh yes, lots of experiemwent sare already going on with that CDB is leading that effort

[14:32] Larry Pixel: Magda, in some cases yes....we are tyring to buikldin learnign into the environment

[14:33] Larry Pixel: we have a prototype set on the roof of the welcome center on the main campus

[14:33] Magda Voss: for example, visit the gallery and reflect on the art.

[14:33] Larry Pixel: Seiffert did it for us, and it teaches lessons on know theory, fractals, etc

[14:33] Hiro Pendragon: I think that's an excellent question about SL in general. For NMC in particular, the fact that it's tying real-world educational institutions into SL already is a big step.

[14:33] Larry Pixel: the art is another thread

[14:34] Larry Pixel: through the librrary, we are looking at the intersection of SL and the web

[14:34] Larry Pixel: RSS, Flickr links, etc

[14:34] Ninmah Ash: in some spaces, the space is a gathering spot... so the content can be supplied as it is in, say, a RL classroom

[14:34] Ninmah Ash: in other spaces, like the museum, there are things there to visit and, yes, reflect on.

[14:34] Honey Hannya: hey!

[14:35] Larry Pixel: happy to do a tour sometime for you and that way you could see th elayers we're tyring to do aroudn story, discovery, and so forth

[14:35] Magda Voss: Yes, let's do that.

[14:35] RightBrain Musketeer is Offline

[14:36] Dagmar Kojishi: Will the space be open during the build, or will it be closed until ready for unveiling?

[14:36] Boliver Oddfellow: unless I am wrong I beleive it will be open

[14:37] Dagmar Kojishi: It would be cool to watch it go up. :)

[14:37] Hiro Pendragon: I'll put up big orange cones around scripting works-in-progress :)

[14:37] property Resistance: Larry, you are expanding in SL.. Are there plans to migrate als oto other platforms that might come up like for instance the multiverse platform?

[14:37] Hiro Pendragon: "Warning: Buggy scripts here! "

[14:37] Hiro Pendragon: *chuckles*

[14:37] Maggie Marat: sorry PAtch heheh

[14:37] Shukran Fahid: :)

[14:37] Larry Pixel: greeat question re other platforms....

[14:37] property Resistance: Or OpenCroquet if it ever launches off working?

[14:37] Ninmah Ash: Tell me more about the multiverse platform?

[14:37] CDB Barkley: That applies to most of SL....

[14:38] Larry Pixel: the answer is not in the short term, but we are approaching this so that waht we learn can be applied in other virtual worlds as well

[14:38] Patch Lamington: hi maggie.. this is neat ... sorry I couldnt match Shuk's work in ramapo :)

[14:38] property Resistance: Ninmah, basically a state of art open mmorpg platform, scalable designed for massive user accumulation and semi statis asset sets

[14:38] Larry Pixel: when new platforms mature, we want to be ready for them

[14:38] Maggie Marat: your work is just fine! :-)

[14:38] Hiro Pendragon: Multiverse still isn't released. It's focus is more on gaming than RL/SL tie-in virtual worlds.

[14:38] Shukran Fahid: *too kind patch*

[14:38] Ninmah Ash: ah

[14:39] Larry Pixel: Sounds like Croquet a bit

[14:39] property Resistance: Done by ex netscape officers www.multiverse.org if i rememebr right

[14:39] Magda Voss: you've made tremendous progress with SL, no question.

[14:39] Hiro Pendragon: There.com offers a nice interface with easier animations and integrated voice, but lacks the freedom of creation that SL provides.

[14:39] Dagmar Kojishi: Does this take SL more in the direction away from gaming?

[14:39] Larry Pixel: will check it out

[14:39] Ninmah Ash: ty

[14:39] Maggie Marat: Hey Gus

[14:39] Patch Lamington: not at all... when this is done, it'll be something to rez in the middle of campus and set max viewing distance

[14:39] Maggie Marat: Over here

[14:39] Hiro Pendragon: Dag - SL never was about gaming.

[14:39] Gus Plisskin: hey maggie

[14:39] property Resistance: Larry, if you want we can discuss it at some point :)

[14:39] Larry Pixel: i think it takes it more int he direction of social nertworking than gaming

[14:39] Larry Pixel: I've begun to think of SL ans a sort of 3D MySpace

[14:40] property Resistance: Well SL has a massive issue up to now and that is user aggregation and its limits

[14:40] Dagmar Kojishi: Right. But a lot of new residents may not realize that. Does this make SL even more solidly in the direction of social networking and real-world applications?

[14:40] Larry Pixel: My3DSpace

[14:40] Hiro Pendragon: I smell buyout!

[14:40] Maggie Marat: yikes

[14:40] Gus Plisskin: Google Second Life?

[14:40] CDB Barkley: American Avatar

[14:40] Ninmah Ash: "MySecondGoogle"

[14:41] Maggie Marat: GoogleSnow

[14:41] Larry Pixel: We hope so....I'd like to see SL be seen as a place where the fun and the serious can coexist....just like RL

[14:41] Dagmar Kojishi: Excellent. Thank you!

[14:41] Magda Voss: Not to change the subject...I'm still wondering about building more context, story, into these spaces... something classic, yet totally new and engaging.

[14:41] Hiro Pendragon: May I answer this?

[14:42] Shukran Fahid: i was but go on hiro

[14:42] Hiro Pendragon: Second Life is about providing a canvas, and the users tell the story. Larry is right on in comparing it with MySpace.

[14:42] Hiro Pendragon: Shuk, what's your take?

[14:42] Maggie Marat: I think education needs more immersive simulation

[14:42] Shukran Fahid: well i was just going to say....

[14:42] Shukran Fahid: mag

[14:42] property Resistance: Maggie, i agree

[14:42] CDB Barkley: Is that the role of the space, or the people and activities?

[14:42] Maggie Marat: something not available to RL teaching situations to often

[14:42] Shukran Fahid: that all of our builds end up takeing on some form of narrative

[14:43] Shukran Fahid: there will be stories within aswell as many discoveries and

[14:43] CDB Barkley: A dash of Myst....

[14:43] Magda Voss: tell me more about building story with simulation...intermixed with learning and discovery..

[14:43] Shukran Fahid: hopefully hidden elements that will take visitors weeks to discover

[14:43] Patch Lamington: i think the idea of having a space to explore really came out in the nmc campus machinima

[14:43] Patch Lamington: so good to keep that element and build on it

[14:44] Hiro Pendragon: A little bit about exploration, that I'd like to touch upon ...

[14:44] Larry Pixel: A sort of hope for your future here is that the NMC Campus can become the center of an education continent in SL

[14:44] Hiro Pendragon: One of the new things about the expanded NMC project is a concept we refer to as "discovery elements"

[14:44] Maggie Marat: a new grid---

[14:44] Larry Pixel: we are tlakign with several colleges who want to put their sims next to this, and share resources

[14:44] Larry Pixel: no need for everyone to build a library, for example

[14:44] Hiro Pendragon: The concept is similar to easter eggs, for those who know the term, where little hidden interactive things are snuck into the software.

[14:45] Patch Lamington: oh that was my question!

[14:45] Magda Voss: i see..

[14:45] Larry Pixel: Soon we will announce a partnership that will bring us an engineerign shcool....and student unions

[14:45] Hiro Pendragon: These are things that dont serve an inherent purpose - their discovery and the interaction with users is the purpose.

[14:45] CDB Barkley: We have a few already... a hidden reef, some secret rooms....

[14:45] Larry Pixel: Let's do talk, then Dagmar

[14:45] property Resistance: Well one advantage of SL is the user content creation, a disadvantage of the platform is the lack of aggregatio nand scalability.. and it is a resurce hog. When i loo kat the present project here, what use does it make of the strengths?

[14:46] Walter Witte is Offline

[14:46] property Resistance: I mean this is a question of platform choiuce, so what role wil lthe strength of SL, the user content creation and modification play?

[14:46] Larry Pixel: We are already working on some Easter Egg type elements....and we have secret spaces as well

[14:46] property Resistance: pardon my typing

[14:46] Larry Pixel: Doing this woudl not be possible without the artisans of SL

[14:46] Larry Pixel: no other platform has that aspect

[14:47] Larry Pixel: as least not now, and not to the degree or at the quality available here

[14:47] Patch Lamington: larry, at slcc you mentioned spaces for nmc linked schools to be able to set up temporary shop... is that still part of this?

[14:47] Ninmah Ash: We are also experimenting with ways that the user content creation can be used in different kinds of classes... it's still pretty experimental

[14:48] Larry Pixel: Yes, that is the holodeck concept...and we will ahv eloft apces for that as well

[14:48] Magda Voss: do you know the PBS series, How Art Made the World..? Watching brings to mind apps for SL.

[14:48] SueMaeLA Escape: How will schools do this?

[14:48] Larry Pixel: With the holodecks, a person can focus on just the exact space he or she needs to add, without worrying about exteriors so much or landscaping.

[14:48] SueMaeLA Escape: How do you apply for one?

[14:49] Larry Pixel: for example, we can have a trauma center, an X-ray lab, and a patient intake, all inthe same space

[14:49] Magda Voss: ah, learning spaces..

[14:49] Larry Pixel: Apply for one what, SueMae?

[14:49] SueMaeLA Escape: Space to use to teach?

[14:49] CDB Barkley: Or the plan for the virtual theater, which can be reconfigured for different types of venues

[14:49] Larry Pixel: and the next day it coudl be a biology lab

[14:49] Dagmar Kojishi: Is it, perhaps, part of the NMC vision to provide some central technical support to reduce duplication, the same way you're talking about not everyone needing a library?

[14:49] Larry Pixel: it is indeed

[14:50] Larry Pixel: not have to redo everyithing everytime so we can focus on the learning aspects

[14:50] Larry Pixel: collectively

[14:50] Larry Pixel: and that expands to the community

[14:51] property Resistance: Can i ask what size of target community you have planned thsi to support?

[14:51] Larry Pixel: just as a real campus is nothing without the people

[14:51] Larry Pixel: so is this one an empty space where it not for its community

[14:51] Magda Voss: ..one of the more exciting things about SL !

[14:51] Larry Pixel: we support nearly 1,000 wuith the current sim

[14:52] Larry Pixel: so this should allow us to expand that somewhat

[14:52] Magda Voss: are there "user communities" around certain subjects..?

[14:52] Dagmar Kojishi: When you say "support," what does that mean? Like, serve at different times? That many come to the sim in a given time?

[14:52] Hiro Pendragon: I apologize, i have to depart to another meeting in 5 minutes. Does anyone have any tech / scripting q's for me before I depart?

[14:52] Dagmar Kojishi: Or group membership?

[14:52] property Resistance: the current userbase of SL is about 100 k regulars so you aim this to be sustainable up to 1 million regulars or 100 k concurrent users?

[14:52] Larry Pixel: yes...around teaching in SL, around library and information, and soon around theater and machinima, the life sciences, and medicine

[14:53] Magda Voss: thx.

[14:53] Shukran Fahid: later hiro

[14:53] Maggie Marat: Bye Hiro TY

[14:53] property Resistance: cu Hiro

[14:53] Ninmah Ash: Thanks Hiro!

[14:53] Patch Lamington: cu hiro!

[14:53] Larry Pixel: no we do not try to bring them all at once....to the contrary, we try to spread it out.....this symposium is a good example

[14:54] Larry Pixel: the events are spread over 12 days

[14:54] Larry Pixel: gives us lots of room that way

[14:54] Larry Pixel: thank Hiro!!

[14:54] Hiro Pendragon: Take care, all! :")

[14:54] Shukran Fahid: night hiro

[14:55] Dagmar Kojishi: Bye!

[14:55] Larry Pixel: like a real campus, we'd like to see people here all the time...even groups of 3, 4, or 5 adds up over a day

[14:55] Magda Voss: Thank you for this great introduction !

[14:55] Larry Pixel: yesterday 86 people visited, and the largest thing we had was only 29 avs

[14:56] Hiro Pendragon: lol oops, I have my times wrong, my meeting was pushed back an hour

[14:56] Larry Pixel: Thank you Magda

[14:56] Larry Pixel: Hi nancy!!

[14:56] Larry Pixel: Lucky us!!

[14:56] Ninmah Ash: wb Hiro :-)

[14:57] Larry Pixel: We are also looking to artner wherever we can in SL.

[14:57] Larry Pixel: So we have a relationship withthe SL Libraians and Info Island, for example

[14:57] Larry Pixel: and they run our library

[14:58] Larry Pixel: We also partner in the arts space...Tayzia of Cresent Moon is the curator of the Aho Museum here

[14:59] Larry Pixel: So thank all of you for coming! Please feel free to explore around...and we're always happy to answer questions or talk about what is possible here

[14:59] Porterhouse Dobbs: Thanks.

[14:59] Larry Pixel: for more infor, see th Campus Observer: www.nmc.org/sl

[14:59] Dagmar Kojishi: Thank you!
