[8:55] Visitor Master: Welcome to NETg in Second Life. The live classrooms are to the SW, the audio and video podcasts are to the NW and the camping and labs are to the NE. IM Doug Latrell if you have any questions.

[9:02] Doug Latrell: Welcome everyone to NETg in second life

[9:02] Doug Latrell: I would recommend you watch the video here sometime before you leave

[9:02] Larry Pixel is Offline

[9:02] Doug Latrell: It will give you a nice tour

[9:03] Doug Latrell: you can also search for netg on www.youtube.com and it will have two videos

[9:03] Doug Latrell: explaining all the nuts and bolts of what this place is about

[9:03] Doug Latrell: I am a senior technical instructor at Thomson NETg.

[9:04] Doug Latrell: we are one of the largest training and educational companies in the world

[9:04] Doug Latrell: I teach pretty much exclusivly online

[9:04] Doug Latrell: as you may have noticed, I don't teach spelling

[9:04] Doug Latrell: :)

[9:04] Doug Latrell: This is interactive so if you have questions, feel free at any time

[9:04] Doug Latrell: LOL

[9:05] Doug Latrell: The primary focus here is to provide training to students

[9:05] Doug Latrell: in a format that they desire and fits their needs

[9:05] Doug Latrell: we have various areas that have audio and video streaming

[9:05] Doug Latrell: in masse, like here

[9:05] Doug Latrell: small groups

[9:05] CDB Barkley: Who are your students, audience?

[9:05] Doug Latrell: or solo

[9:05] Doug Latrell: mostly corporations and government

[9:06] Doug Latrell: we teach Microsoft, Cisco and Business professional development

[9:06] Doug Latrell: we are also resold by colleges

[9:06] Davee Commerce: How many courses have you taught here so far ?

[9:06] Doug Latrell: I have been doing this for over 7 years

[9:06] Doug Latrell: so several hundred

[9:06] Davee Commerce: in SL ?

[9:07] Doug Latrell: over the web

[9:07] Doug Latrell: in second life, we are developing the final look

[9:07] Davee Commerce: I meant how many in SL :)

[9:07] Doug Latrell: but we have streamed the live classes

[9:07] Doug Latrell: into sl

[9:07] Doug Latrell: total, around 20

[9:07] Davee Commerce: wow ty

[9:08] Doug Latrell: we are a bit different that some of you in that we don't bring students into secondlife

[9:08] Doug Latrell: they are usually aready here

[9:08] Doug Latrell: most students are just using a browser and getting streaming audio

[9:08] Troy McLuhan: Kinda like TeaZers

[9:08] Doug Latrell: secondlife is used to provide a networking environment

[9:08] Doug Latrell: homework in an interesting location

[9:08] RightBrain Musketeer: yea...I changed the look

[9:09] RightBrain Musketeer: Chuck...this is CDB Barkley over here...he does the NMC.

[9:09] Doug Latrell: you may have noticed we have a building on fire behind me

[9:09] ChuckNorris Mission: Hi CDB!

[9:09] Doug Latrell: I was at apple last week and one attendee asked about the advantages of SL over regular web based live training

[9:09] Doug Latrell: I talked about how you could do 3d

[9:09] Doug Latrell: and all that

[9:10] Doug Latrell: then I showed them the campus

[9:10] Doug Latrell: one comment, all you showed was streaming audio and video

[9:10] Doug Latrell: you already do that in your normal classes

[9:10] Doug Latrell: no 3d based on the training

[9:10] Doug Latrell: that got me to thinking

[9:10] Doug Latrell: now, of course, time has been an issue as I have built all this stuff

[9:10] Doug Latrell: and that has taken time as I needed to learn how to do it.

[9:11] Doug Latrell: but now that I have the mad skillz :)

[9:11] CDB Barkley: So was this NETg's directove to do this?

[9:11] Doug Latrell: it is much faster

[9:11] CDB Barkley: directive

[9:11] Doug Latrell: Eliff, the host of the presentation

[9:11] Doug Latrell: is doing a discussion in Norway to oil company

[9:11] Doug Latrell: wanted to discuss advantages of a 3d environment

[9:11] Doug Latrell: besides the novelity of just being here

[9:12] Doug Latrell: what are the advantages

[9:12] Doug Latrell: besides being cool

[9:12] Davee Commerce: good question

[9:12] Doug Latrell: so I put together a simulater

[9:12] Doug Latrell: not quite finished

[9:12] Doug Latrell: but close

[9:12] Doug Latrell: of an off shore oilrig

[9:12] Doug Latrell: to train firefighters

[9:12] Doug Latrell: in a large, but safe environment

[9:12] Doug Latrell: and that is what is onfire behind you.

[9:13] Doug Latrell: we can do a walk about, show you the normal stuff

[9:13] Doug Latrell: and then I can show you that

[9:13] Doug Latrell: of course, the video does the normal walk about and has audio narration

[9:13] CDB Barkley: Is it always on fire?

[9:13] Doug Latrell: would you rather just see the oil rig

[9:13] Doug Latrell: I can turn it on or off

[9:13] CDB Barkley: And the audio tools you mentined last buzz

[9:13] Doug Latrell: I am playing with smoke generators now

[9:14] Doug Latrell: yes, do stream classes?

[9:14] Doug Latrell: to stream classes?

[9:14] Doug Latrell: he have an windows media server

[9:14] Corwin Carillon: like CDB, I would also like to see and hear about the audio setup in the individual chairs that you mentioned in the Buzz meeting if poss

[9:14] Doug Latrell: that hooks into a telephone conference bridge

[9:14] Doug Latrell: sure.

[9:14] Doug Latrell: that provides the stream

[9:15] Doug Latrell: we can also use jetcast client on winamp

[9:15] Doug Latrell: if you don't want to use a phone

[9:15] Doug Latrell: each client connects to the stream independantly

[9:15] Doug Latrell: the ball that someone is playing with is modifying the land's audio track[9:15] CDB Barkley: Is it random?

[9:16] Doug Latrell: the way you do seperate audio

[9:16] Doug Latrell: is split your land

[9:16] Doug Latrell: this main area, including the auditorium is one land

[9:16] Doug Latrell: if you will follow me, I will show you the extreme

[9:17] Doug Latrell: I am going to the building behind the fountain

[9:18] Doug Latrell: what you do is elevate your land so it sticks above the floor

[9:18] RightBrain Musketeer: wow...the cubicals are very real...

[9:18] Doug Latrell: thanks

[9:18] Doug Latrell: then you split the land

[9:18] Doug Latrell: you have to own it to do that

[9:18] ChuckNorris Mission: this is very cool

[9:19] Doug Latrell: with the land split into little peices

[9:19] Doug Latrell: you place the chairs and couches so each seating area is in its own land

[9:19] Doug Latrell: use poseballs to ensure people sit in the right spot

[9:19] Doug Latrell: make them yourself or get a contractor

[9:19] Doug Latrell: otherwise your pose balls may be a bit embrassing

[9:19] Doug Latrell: Each place currently has a ball

[9:20] Doug Latrell: the couches are just audio

[9:20] Doug Latrell: the cubes are audio and/or video

[9:20] Doug Latrell: you can have two people sit on the couch in front of the video

[9:20] Doug Latrell: and since they are on seperate land

[9:20] Doug Latrell: they can watch two different things

[9:20] Doug Latrell: on the same screen

[9:21] Doug Latrell: I currently use balls for control

[9:21] Doug Latrell: but will change to a hud

[9:21] Corwin Carillon: Dong is the learning organized mostly around teacher -> students and self-access?

[9:21] Doug Latrell: so I can't change your stream

[9:22] Flight Band: All Go

[9:22] Davee Commerce is Online

[9:22] Doug Latrell: the live classroom building

[9:22] Doug Latrell: here in the cube

[9:22] Doug Latrell: or over by the club on a computer

[9:22] Doug Latrell: all to attend their live class

[9:22] Doug Latrell: or recorded audio

[9:22] Doug Latrell: or recorded video

[9:23] Doug Latrell: with the change by Quick Time, swf files no longer play by default

[9:23] Doug Latrell: that is an issue

[9:23] Doug Latrell: looking to bulk convert as all our slides are swf files

[9:23] Doug Latrell: questions?

[9:23] Troy McLuhan: Why cubicles? This is SL...

[9:23] Doug Latrell: just another way to sit

[9:23] Doug Latrell: people are familiar

[9:23] Doug Latrell: but I have an outdoor

[9:23] Doug Latrell: several classroooms

[9:24] Doug Latrell: you can sit at the bar and look at the screens

[9:24] Doug Latrell: you can sit outdoors under the canopy and listen

[9:25] Davee Commerce: is it easier to find stuff than on a website for example ?

[9:25] Doug Latrell: Our classes over the web are instructor taught

[9:25] Doug Latrell: live

[9:25] Doug Latrell: actually two instructors

[9:25] Doug Latrell: sort of like a radio talkshow

[9:25] Flameheart Sol: Doug: I missed the first couple of minutes - is this campus opne to anyone, or do you have to be enrolled?

[9:25] Doug Latrell: with animated slides

[9:25] Flameheart Sol: open

[9:25] Doug Latrell: the campus is open to everyone, but we will soon charge for some classes

[9:26] Doug Latrell: here, the student can sit with peers

[9:26] Doug Latrell: and chat

[9:26] Doug Latrell: and IM

[9:26] Doug Latrell: and all that

[9:26] Flameheart Sol: so someone could get Cisco training or PMI for a small fee?

[9:26] Doug Latrell: nice envrionment

[9:26] Doug Latrell: yes

[9:26] Doug Latrell: usually about 1k USD

[9:26] Doug Latrell: but here we will discount

[9:26] Flameheart Sol: in the case of PMI, what does the program cover?

[9:26] Flameheart Sol: does it prepare someone to sit for the exam?

[9:26] Doug Latrell: It is an exam prep for the PMI exam

[9:27] Doug Latrell: one of our most popular courses

[9:27] Davee Commerce: I noticed earlier that there are control rooms for each classroom - where a technician avatar would sit - is that correct?

[9:27] Doug Latrell: we are having a demystified on Friday

[9:27] Doug Latrell: the classrooms, want to go see them?

[9:27] Davee Commerce: yes

[9:27] Doug Latrell: so everyone know what we are talking about?

[9:27] Doug Latrell: k

[9:27] Doug Latrell: follow me. We will be going to the building to the right

[9:27] Troy McLuhan: PMI?

[9:27] Lyr Lobo: project management

[9:28] Troy McLuhan: Ah

[9:28] Davee Commerce: sorry

[9:28] Doug Latrell: go into the microsoft room

[9:28] Flameheart Sol: np

[9:28] Doug Latrell shouts: we are in the Microsoft room

[9:29] Flameheart Sol: so these classes are now being offered for free?

[9:29] Corwin Carillon: after you :)

[9:29] Doug Latrell: Until I start to charge for them

[9:29] Doug Latrell: not being snippy

[9:29] Flameheart Sol: No - as an educator I am just trying to get me mind around it

[9:29] Doug Latrell: just the fact is with the Quick TIme issue

[9:30] Flameheart Sol: so there is no accreditation, just preparatory learning

[9:30] Flameheart Sol: to sit for an exam

[9:31] Doug Latrell: see

[9:31] Doug Latrell: not being snippy

[9:31] Doug Latrell: just don't feel right about charging for classes

[9:31] Doug Latrell: until it is more stable

[9:31] Doug Latrell: I just crashed

[9:31] Lyr Lobo nods

[9:31] Doug Latrell: If I were taking a PMI course and SL crashed, I would be a bit upset

[9:32] CDB Barkley: ctrl-alt-delete!!!

[9:32] Flameheart Sol: but these are preparatory workshops to sit for an exam

[9:32] Doug Latrell: the last few updates have been a horror show

[9:32] Davee Commerce: yes

[9:32] Lyr Lobo: hmm , but it is a frequent occurrence on some of the training sims... yes

[9:32] Flameheart Sol: not an accreditated program of some sort

[9:32] Doug Latrell: so probably won't charge until it is more stable

[9:32] Doug Latrell: our classes, PMI and all that, are official

[9:32] Doug Latrell: We are a certified training provider

[9:33] Flameheart Sol: so you are providing the space

[9:33] Doug Latrell: when resold via colleges it is accredited

[9:33] Doug Latrell: providing the space?

[9:33] Doug Latrell: not sure what you mean

[9:33] Flameheart Sol: and the companies themselves are providing the learning

[9:33] Doug Latrell: our normal mode of delivery is over the web

[9:33] Doug Latrell: If they want

[9:33] Doug Latrell: but normally they use our normal stuff

[9:33] Doug Latrell: for example

[9:33] Doug Latrell: PMI

[9:33] Doug Latrell: we use the official material

[9:34] Doug Latrell: CIsco, official material

[9:34] Doug Latrell: Microsoft, in house we wrote

[9:34] Doug Latrell: but we also do custom

[9:34] Doug Latrell: we typically do it over the web

[9:34] Doug Latrell: very light client

[9:34] Doug Latrell: all they need is a browser, java and flash

[9:34] Doug Latrell: we stream audio and all that

[9:34] Doug Latrell: if they want to take it here, they can

[9:35] Doug Latrell: but, it is basically the same

[9:35] Doug Latrell: audio and video

[9:35] Doug Latrell: SL lets us take it to the next level

[9:35] Doug Latrell: with real 3d

[9:35] Doug Latrell: not just window dressing

[9:35] Doug Latrell: we are working on some HR role playing

[9:35] Doug Latrell: communications role playing

[9:35] Doug Latrell: would be prohibitive in RL

[9:35] Doug Latrell: the oilfire sim

[9:35] CDB Barkley: That sounds interesting

[9:35] Doug Latrell: would be near impossible in SL

[9:36] Doug Latrell: so instead of just trying to replicate what we currently do

[9:36] CDB Barkley: This part here seems individual interacting with content, maybe a teacher

[9:36] CDB Barkley: Is there group work?

[9:36] Doug Latrell: which we do frankly better on the web

[9:36] Doug Latrell: we are adding interaction

[9:36] Doug Latrell: the group work is involved

[9:36] Doug Latrell: especially with the simualtions we are now building

[9:36] CDB Barkley: Do you have to orient clients to SL?

[9:36] Doug Latrell: great question

[9:37] CDB Barkley: Or do they need to know how to walk first?

[9:37] Doug Latrell: again, we ar different as our SL customers are already in SL

[9:37] CDB Barkley: that helps!

[9:37] Doug Latrell: where as colleges and things bring thier students in

[9:37] Doug Latrell: but with the sime

[9:37] Doug Latrell: sims

[9:37] Doug Latrell: we will inherit that problem

[9:37] Doug Latrell: so I would suggest a staging area

[9:37] Doug Latrell: like they have at the prim school

[9:38] Doug Latrell: where there are graphics of the interface

[9:38] Doug Latrell: and the students can use that to get familiar

[9:38] Doug Latrell: we would rely on orientation island, just so they learn to walk

[9:38] Doug Latrell: maybe teleport

[9:38] Doug Latrell: but I would recommend a mandatory

[9:38] Doug Latrell: orientation session

[9:38] CDB Barkley: Is the sound booth above us a functional tool for runnign classes?

[9:38] Doug Latrell: before their first class

[9:38] Doug Latrell: The media booth above has a couple of purposes

[9:39] Doug Latrell: I would have a lecturn or two on stage here

[9:39] Doug Latrell: that has pose balls that animates an instructor avatar

[9:39] Doug Latrell: if the video is a media stream, won't need the engineer

[9:39] Doug Latrell: in the boot

[9:39] Doug Latrell: booth

[9:39] Doug Latrell: in fact, the instructor wouldn't have to really be here

[9:39] Doug Latrell: just an avatar

[9:40] Doug Latrell: then I would have the engineer answering questions

[9:40] Doug Latrell: IMed to the instructor

[9:40] Doug Latrell: or just shouted out

[9:40] CDB Barkley: So an animation for the speaker makes him/her go like Steve Jobs?

[9:40] Doug Latrell: if the slides are not streamed

[9:40] Doug Latrell: yes

[9:40] Doug Latrell: if the video is seperate slides

[9:40] Doug Latrell: I would have a playball in the booth

[9:40] Doug Latrell: like in the cubs

[9:40] Doug Latrell: but the engineer would advance it as needed

[9:41] Doug Latrell: and would also be standing by for questions

[9:41] Doug Latrell: so the booths are functional

[9:41] Doug Latrell: if needed

[9:41] Doug Latrell: one could go from fully "manned" with an instructor or two and mentors asking questions

[9:41] Doug Latrell: to fully automated with pose balls and a reatream of the audio and video

[9:41] Doug Latrell: complete flexibility

[9:42] Doug Latrell: this entire area is a seperate land

[9:42] Doug Latrell: so you can control access

[9:42] Doug Latrell: and the audio and video is only visible in this room

[9:42] Doug Latrell: if you stand outside, you can see in

[9:42] Doug Latrell: but can't hear the audio or see the video

[9:42] Doug Latrell: we have 4 of these room

[9:42] RightBrain Musketeer: so basically...a separate piece of land is like a separate learning module, right?

[9:42] Davee Commerce: so the door will only let thru paying customers ?

[9:42] Doug Latrell: no, it is a seperate class

[9:43] Doug Latrell: now is open to everyone

[9:43] Doug Latrell: but can limit it

[9:43] Doug Latrell: I would probably do it with group memberships

[9:43] Doug Latrell: or could do it based on time

[9:43] Doug Latrell: SL lets you do that already

[9:43] Doug Latrell: it is a function of the land

[9:43] Doug Latrell: other questions

[9:43] Doug Latrell: monologing up here

[9:43] Doug Latrell: very bad form

[9:43] Doug Latrell: LOL

[9:44] Lyr Lobo smiles

[9:44] Doug Latrell: want to see the burn room?

[9:44] Lyr Lobo: yes

[9:44] Flameheart Sol: Yes

[9:44] Corwin Carillon: yep

[9:44] Doug Latrell: cool. I will turn off the smoke and meet you there. It is the big building that is onfire

[9:44] Davee Commerce: yes please

[9:44] Doug Latrell: LOL

[9:44] Randy Nap: sure

[9:45] Doug Latrell: We are at the big oil derrick. WIll tp if you need

[9:45] Doug Latrell: IM doug latrell if you get lost

[9:46] Doug Latrell: okay

[9:46] Doug Latrell: I don't have a roof or doors yet

[9:46] Doug Latrell: this is a mock up of an offshore oil platform

[9:46] Doug Latrell: it isn't done, obviously

[9:47] RightBrain Musketeer: very cool!

[9:47] Doug Latrell: but I started on Monday and been plugging away

[9:47] Doug Latrell: The idea is they start to the right here

[9:47] Doug Latrell: and suit up

[9:47] Doug Latrell: they have to do several operations correctly

[9:47] Doug Latrell: first they have to open the door.

[9:47] Doug Latrell: there isn't one yet

[9:47] Doug Latrell: If you know about shipboard firefighting

[9:47] Doug Latrell: there are certain procedures

[9:48] Doug Latrell: do it wrong and you get huert

[9:48] Doug Latrell: hurt

[9:48] Doug Latrell: like on the door

[9:48] Doug Latrell: you have to open hinge side first

[9:48] Doug Latrell: to vent the pressure

[9:48] Doug Latrell: or the door explosivly flies open

[9:48] Doug Latrell: and you die

[9:48] Doug Latrell: so we will be grading each operation

[9:49] Doug Latrell: I will wrap this with an observation platform

[9:49] Doug Latrell: and turn the outside walls transparent

[9:49] Doug Latrell: so the instructors and other students can watch

[9:49] Doug Latrell: They will also control the smoke and fire.

[9:49] Doug Latrell: I will show you the smoke in a moment

[9:49] CDB Barkley: Ambient noise as well?

[9:49] Doug Latrell: it will also involve victim rescure

[9:49] Doug Latrell: rescue

[9:50] Doug Latrell: noise and raido will wll be part

[9:50] Doug Latrell: can't get the smell to work yet

[9:50] Doug Latrell: LOL

[9:50] Corwin Carillon: smiles

[9:50] Troy McLuhan: SL version 3.14

[9:50] Doug Latrell: the vidtems will be hidden about

[9:50] Doug Latrell: self deploying

[9:50] Doug Latrell: coud be actors, i.e. other students

[9:50] CDB Barkley: Smells like an update

[9:50] Doug Latrell: or bots

[9:50] Davee Commerce: maybe if you had a Dell battery you could get it to burst into flames ?

[9:50] Doug Latrell: LOL

[9:50] Doug Latrell: sony

[9:50] CDB Barkley: Oi

[9:50] Doug Latrell: anyway :)

[9:51] Doug Latrell: when they click the bot it follows them

[9:51] Doug Latrell: Want to see version.99 of the bot?

[9:51] Davee Commerce: yes please

[9:51] CDB Barkley: of course

[9:51] Davee Commerce: cute

[9:51] Doug Latrell: currently creepy

[9:51] Randy Nap: sure

[9:51] Corwin Carillon: lol

[9:52] Doug Latrell: but, they won't follow until found

[9:52] Doug Latrell: and may even hide

[9:52] Doug Latrell: they also have to secure power and air

[9:52] Doug Latrell: or the fire and smoke spreads

[9:52] Doug Latrell: I will show a smoke gen

[9:53] Lyr Lobo: thank you Doug... must dash to a meeting..this is great

[9:53] Doug Latrell: if you will all gather at the entry, I will set it off

[9:53] Doug Latrell: and you can wander a bit.

[9:53] CDB Barkley: ok, thanks Doug

[9:53] Doug Latrell: then I will shut it off and you can look about

[9:53] Corwin Carillon: thx Doug

[9:53] Doug Latrell: they would start here

[9:54] Doug Latrell: BTW, if you have any questions, feel free to IM me or email me at doug.bassett@thomson.com.

[9:54] Doug Latrell: going off to set the fires

[9:54] Doug Latrell: LOL

[9:54] Doug Latrell: this is version 1

[9:55] Lyr Lobo is Offline

[9:55] Doug Latrell: don't quite like it yet

[9:55] Doug Latrell: the wind is an issue

[9:55] Doug Latrell: but will fix that

[9:55] Doug Latrell: the idea is in a real fire, you have a really hard time seeing

[9:55] Doug Latrell: let me get the kitty really fast

[9:55] CDB Barkley: needs to more fog like?

[9:55] Doug Latrell: LOL

[9:55] Doug Latrell: yes

[9:55] Doug Latrell: but black

[9:55] Corwin Carillon: wait till a typhoon blows through

[9:56] Troy McLuhan gasps for breath

[9:56] Doug Latrell: if you fly, you will see that a lot is blowing over the water

[9:56] Doug Latrell: We will have that if they don't wear their grar

[9:56] Doug Latrell: gear

[9:57] Doug Latrell: in a real fire

[9:57] Doug Latrell: it is solid smoke

[9:57] Doug Latrell: you can't see anything

[9:57] CDB Barkley: That was cool

[9:57] Doug Latrell: but this gives some aids.

[9:57] Doug Latrell: feel free to wander about the rig

[9:57] Doug Latrell: I need to add furnature

[9:57] Doug Latrell: desks and gear

[9:57] Troy McLuhan: They could have a HUD that shows where they are based on integrated measurements from accelerometers and gryros

[9:57] Doug Latrell: more piping

[9:57] Doug Latrell: all that

[9:57] Jera Yin: How long did it take to create that simulation?

[9:58] Doug Latrell: this whole thing I started monday evening

[9:58] Doug Latrell: the Island took 4 months

[9:58] Doug Latrell: as I didn't have a clue

[9:58] Doug Latrell: this is much faster

[9:58] Flameheart Sol: Is this all you do professionally?

[9:58] Davee Commerce: you've certainly built a lot here by yourself !

[9:58] Doug Latrell: I recommend you take just a couple of classes, makes it easy

[9:58] CDB Barkley: Agreed, its a lot

[9:58] Doug Latrell: I am a corporate trainer

[9:58] Doug Latrell: microsoft, cisco and Business development

[9:58] Flameheart Sol: I mean, we are thinking of taking some of our programs into SL

[9:58] Doug Latrell: my company encourages innovation

[9:58] Flameheart Sol: this sounds like a full time job

[9:59] Doug Latrell: so they pay for the island

[9:59] Flameheart Sol: I handle all electronic delibery initiatives

[9:59] Flameheart Sol: delivery

[9:59] Doug Latrell: but I have to mostly do it when I am not teaching

[9:59] Doug Latrell: but we don't teach on friday
