Henry Jenkins From Teen Grid

From NMC-Campus

Jump to: navigation, search

On December 20, 2006, Henry Jenkins paid a visit to Global Kids Island on the Teen Grid. NMC assisted by streaming the audio, and provided a place on NCM Campus for us "non-teens" to listen in.. and we even got a few questions passed by chat to Jenkins.

Two screens in Huntley ballroom flashed random images of Jenkins, his appearance in Second Life for the MacArthur Foundation press conference, and of the Global Kids Island.

[15:06] Cosmopolitan whispers: Ah, so good..Perfectly shaken!!

[15:07] Lou Liebknecht: I went over to the Harvard sim for the name of the building so that I can include it in our proposal. What is the correct name? Austine Hall or Berkman?

[15:07] Cosmopolitan whispers: Ah, so good..Perfectly shaken!!

[15:07] Ilene Pratt: Our building? Hmmm.. I'll have to ask Drew! I'll send him some real email.

[15:07] Espresso machine : gives a cup to ShaoGin Yue

[15:08] ShaoGin Yue: Thanks!

[15:08] Lou Liebknecht: No, not your building, the Harvard law school one.

[15:09] Lou Liebknecht: Thanks

[15:09] Shimaki Shikami: NMC is more fun than Berkman island. At least right now. :)

[15:10] CDB Barkley: Barry Joseph now on

[15:18] Magda Voss: Here's a question...

[15:18] Magda Voss: It seems to me that SL is more a MOSS (Massive Online Simulation) than a game, but how can we create a game like environment here ?

[15:20] Magda Voss: using SL like a learning commnity...

[15:20] Ilene Pratt: It's in libraries too!

[15:23] Magda Voss: Thanks ! .. yes, it's a very enabling environment ! Lots of possibilities for role playing, and story telling, etc.

[15:24] Magda Voss: Cool, thanks .

[15:24] CDB Barkley: Music is on

[15:25] CDB Barkley: Time to dance

[15:36] Kim Chihuly: i wish more of the profs at my school would listen to this guy

[15:37] Kim Chihuly: he's about play (and the learning that comes from it) and they're all about curriculum objectives and focing the game into those objectives

[15:38] John2 Kepler: Thank you, now I hear him.

[15:38] CDB Barkley: Chat your questions..... we'll send to henry

[15:39] Beth Kavka: did he already get questions about the validity of sl?

[15:39] CDB Barkley: not really

[15:39] CDB Barkley: frame it so i can copy paste

[15:40] Beth Kavka: There has been a lot of criticism lately that SL is just a fad and does not have educational value, partly in response to recent hype, what is your opinion?

[15:40] Beth Kavka: Are we all wasting our time and money?

[15:41] Piett Hesse: gone

[15:41] Kim Chihuly: he he

[15:41] Christopher Prudhomme: will there be an archive of this?

[15:41] Beth Kavka: got lag?

[15:42] Piett Hesse: yes

[15:42] CDB Barkley: sorry

[15:42] Kim Chihuly: we could talk about beth's question - how do we convince others this isn't a waste of time/money?

[15:42] Beth Kavka: yes

[15:42] Christopher Prudhomme: my audio is gone

[15:42] Boris Grommet: Same here - no audio.

[15:42] Kip Yellowjacket: TV is a waste of time.

[15:42] CDB Barkley: stop/start your music channel

[15:42] Piett Hesse: ok, sound on

[15:43] Kip Yellowjacket: true

[15:43] ShaoGin Yue: ok works for me

[15:43] SueMaeLA Escape: nothing

[15:43] Kip Yellowjacket: TV is not interactive enough.

[15:44] Boris Grommet: Kip, have you read "Everything Bad Is Good For You?"

[15:44] Kim Chihuly: great book!

[15:44] Kip Yellowjacket: No I haven't.

[15:44] CDB Barkley: great book

[15:44] Sleestak Mycron: Interactive has its place, but so does non-interactive presentation/instruction

[15:44] Kip Yellowjacket: Thx for recommendation tho.

[15:45] Kip Yellowjacket: ic

[15:45] Kip Yellowjacket: k

[15:45] Kim Chihuly: his discussion of how difficult tv is now compared to hte past was a good read

[15:45] Boris Grommet: Check it out - might change your mind about TV.

[15:45] Kip Yellowjacket: am open to all arguments : )

[15:45] CDB Barkley: a few songs and we'll be back wiht more henry

[15:45] Kip Yellowjacket: Just need less trash TV...as a society...

[15:46] Kip Yellowjacket: k

[15:46] Kim Chihuly: tha's probably true of a lot of media - movies and novels

[15:46] Kip Yellowjacket: thx : )

[15:46] Kip Yellowjacket: absolutely

[15:46] Piett Hesse: i agree. Not specific channels are driven by commercials

[15:46] Sleestak Mycron: He had another great book a few years ago called "Interface Culture."

[15:46] CDB Barkley: Weird Al

[15:46] Sleestak Mycron: Also a good read, but a little out of date now...

[15:54] Beth Kavka: wonder if we get him to tp here afterwards?

[15:55] Cosmopolitan whispers: Ah, so good..Perfectly shaken!!

[15:55] CDB Barkley: Doubtful- tough schedule

[15:55] CDB Barkley: We'll work on a future event

[15:55] CDB Barkley: let him get his SL feet ;-)

[15:55] Boris Grommet: That'd be great.

[15:55] Beth Kavka: so, probably can't answer q's form us here?

[15:55] CDB Barkley: We are going to have a lot of HUGE events here this year

[15:56] CDB Barkley: I am relaying them by chat

[15:56] CDB Barkley: but the kids are asking LOTS of great questions

[15:56] Beth Kavka: so he thinks immersive world are the platform of the future ..

[15:56] Beth Kavka: web3.0 = SL et al

[15:56] CDB Barkley: web 5.2!

[15:56] Beth Kavka: emerging as an important place for experiments ..

[15:56] Sullivan Tomcat: I agree - an experimental space.

[15:57] Beth Kavka: reimagine connections ..

[15:57] Boris Grommet: I'm getting environmental audio, but no stream - can others hear Henry?

[15:57] Sullivan Tomcat: imagine it was easier to navigate like using a nintendo wii

[15:57] John2 Kepler: I can still hear him.

[15:58] Beth Kavka: yes I can hear him

[15:58] Beth Kavka: fuzzy

[15:58] Piett Hesse: not me. I'll tp out and in to tryu

[15:59] Sullivan Tomcat: ghood soundbyte

[15:59] Beth Kavka: it fits nicely with nonprofit motives for being in here ..

[15:59] Beth Kavka: change the world by changing a virtual world

[16:00] Kim Chihuly: at least learn about changing the world, see it as apossibility

[16:00] Beth Kavka: will this be archived ..?

[16:00] CDB Barkley: yes

[16:00] Sullivan Tomcat: he was talking about that earlier I think - experiments with democracy in SL translated into dialogues and changes in real world

[16:00] Cosmopolitan whispers: Ah, so good..Perfectly shaken!!

[16:00] Sullivan Tomcat: its a safe environment to take a stand and be your beliefs...

[16:00] Beth Kavka: will the audio be posted on the nmc blog?

[16:01] CDB Barkley: yes

[16:01] Beth Kavka: or holymeatballs

[16:01] Beth Kavka: great ..

[16:01] Sullivan Tomcat: great

[16:01] Beth Kavka: and text transcript?

[16:01] Beth Kavka: :-)

[16:01] John2 Kepler: AS more and more of the students coming to college have "learned" from on-line games, it would seem obvious that someting like SL would be a good learning environment for them.

[16:01] Quidit OFlynn: That's great

[16:01] Quidit OFlynn: was not able to get here in time, got pulled away

[16:02] Beth Kavka: audio back

[16:02] Beth Kavka: not escape reality, but reinvent it

[16:03] Beth Kavka: asking people to bring what they learn here and bring it back to your community

[16:04] Espresso machine : gives a cup to Piett Hesse

[16:04] CDB Barkley: We'll be posting the podcast hopefully tomorrow

[16:04] Espresso Demi Tasse whispers: Now THAT will open your eyes!

[16:04] CDB Barkley: Sorry for audio lapses

[16:04] CDB Barkley: It's quite experimental

[16:05] Beth Kavka: no problem ..

[16:05] Bus Toll: Thanks for hosting it!

[16:05] CDB Barkley: So does anyone have a take on the flap over SL numbers?

[16:05] Beth Kavka: thanks .. for the opportunity

[16:05] Sullivan Tomcat: yeah - its great to be a part of this./

[16:05] CDB Barkley: Sure

[16:05] Kim Chihuly: would be interesting to read about hte audio set up - get the knowledge out so it's not experimental in the future<g>

[16:05] CDB Barkley: We're having an arts event in February

[16:05] CDB Barkley: Here is a URL for the audio setup...

[16:05] Boris Grommet: You mean, registered, vs active overall, vs active at any given moment?

[16:05] John2 Kepler: HI Beth, I enjoyed your comments.

[16:06] CDB Barkley: http://cogdogblog.com/2006/12/20/audio-casting-setup/

[16:06] CDB Barkley: Beth rocks!

[16:06] Sullivan Tomcat: yes - I agree. If someoine were to post a schematic diagram of how the audio was rigged for this event.... very sueful. especially for archival.

[16:06] Beth Kavka: tx ..

[16:06] Beth Kavka: Sullivan ..

[16:06] CDB Barkley: http://cogdogblog.com/2006/08/20/we-can-all-be-radio-stations/

[16:06] Piett Hesse: CDB, the Symposium 2 months ago had great sound, don't you think ?

[16:06] Sullivan Tomcat: :)

[16:06] CDB Barkley: Diagram- http://cogdogblog.com/wp-content/uploads/sl-audio-cast2-tm.jpg

[16:06] CDB Barkley: Yes.

[16:06] CDB Barkley: For this one I had to use my telephone on speaker phone

[16:07] Piett Hesse: :)

[16:07] CDB Barkley: And we may have stressed our audio stream-- 20 some here and maybe 60-70 in TG

[16:08] Piett Hesse: oh, ok

[16:08] CDB Barkley: I am fading out the music channel....

[16:08] CDB Barkley: If you have iTunes, you can listen to the DJ form Global kids at http://www.carbonixlab.com:8000/

[16:08] CDB Barkley: He is streaming now

[16:09] CDB Barkley: A teen DJ

[16:09] Kip Yellowjacket: cool

[16:10] Piett Hesse: Well, IBM says Metaverses will make e-business obsolete: v-business is the future. I guess for education metaverses are still baby childs too.
