A Look to the Coming Year: The NMC in 2009
In this segment of the meeting, NMC members will learn about new NMC programs and services for members coming in 2009 that are expressly designed to help you maximize the benefit of your NMC membership at your institution, including a new members-only professional development program that will be free to anyone in your institution. We’ve been hard at work on a whole palette of new enhancements to the NMC website, and we’ll plan to show you how these will help you connect to other members and to the information you need.
We’ll also discuss the 2008 member survey and review some exciting new changes to NMC Virtual Worlds. We’ll wrap up the morning with a look at the NMC’s Initiatives for 2009 and a preview of what you can expect over the coming year.
11:00 am - noon
Sharing Campus Strategies
In this hour we will allow Directors unable to attend the meeting to join us live via our Adobe Connect Seminar Room for an open discussion on ideas how to maintain the work of innovation in times of tightening resources, as well as how we can better use our community of NMC Directors
Noon - 1:30 pm
Lunch
1:30 – 2:30 pm
Strategies in Response to the Economy
In the current economic situation, many institutions are finding it harder and harder to maintain services and even staff at the levels which they feel are needed, much less to expand, to grow new services, or to participate in conferences and professional development opportunities. The afternoon session will focus on how NMC campuses can work together to adjust to emerging fiscal realities on campuses, and on the roles the NMC can play in easing some of these burdens. During this session we will revisit a very timely white paper that NMC Directors developed just a few years ago called Maximizing Campus Impact: Lessons from the Trenches, and talk about where those strategies continue to hit the mark, and where new ideas are needed. The ideas from this session will be captured and shared across the entire members via an update to the Maximizing Campus Impact white paper.
2:30 – 2:45 pm
Break
2:45 – 4:15 pm
Strategies to Support Innovation
In the closing hour and a half, we will turn our attention to proactive strategies to ensure that NMC members can not only survive the downturn, but emerge on the other side with new ideas ready to implement, and a reputation on campus for creative approaches to staff learning and professional development, to engaging with and applying new technologies, and more. When budgets are tight, new media units in particular have much to offer in the way of helping campuses do more with less. There may be no better time for your unit to get noticed. As with the earlier afternoon session, the ideas captured here will be shared with the entire membership.
4:15 - 4:30 pm
Meeting Wrap-Up
As the day winds to a close, as is the NMC tradition, we’ll plan to turn the floor over to you for your reflections and thoughts.
