As the tradition goes the last act of the 2007 NMC Summer Conference was the premiere of a video as a promotion of next year's conference.

Using a popular television show's fast-paced theme, in this video, the Princeton University Conference Taskforce Unit engages in a series of activities that will unfold June 11-14, 2008 at Princeton.

NMC Conversations #8: Preview of the 2008 Summer Conference at Princeton University

The 2008 NMC Summer Conference, hosted at Princeton University, is coming up soon, so we thought it was a good time to have an NMC conversation with conference host, David Hopkins, Manager of the New Media Center at Princeton. In our conversation, David has shared what this experience means for Princeton and an overview of what the “Conference Task Force” has been up to. Nancy Reeves, Director of Member Services for NMC also joined our conversation. She let us know that registrations were on pace to set a record (this week we passed 500) and shared some details of the special events taking place at this year's conference. Larry Johnson described a special feature just added - a pre-conference workshop on digital SLR photography with Sports Illustrated photographer Bill Frakes and Don Henderson, our NMC Board member from Apple. Inc. And Larry also shared the news that the John Lennon Bus will be present for the entire conference- this is an amazing music and video studio on wheels. We are announcing two special opportunities for conference attendees to get some "time on the bus"- one is a drawing for 6 people to spend a day on the Lennon Bus recording music and the other is Rock Hall 2.0 - a chance for anyone to sign up for a 15 minute session to record any kind of audio loop, that will ultimately be shared as a free resource. And there are a lot of things happening at the conference celebrating the 15th year of the NMC - check out the NMC@15 photo collection (and add your own photos of "fifteen-ness" soon as we are making a commemorative video).

Technology and the Global Commons

Opening Keynote, 2008 NMC Summer Conference, Princeton University
Diana Oblinger, EDUCAUSE

The days of walled-off learning, where students are separated into grades, disciplines and physical locations, are giving way to programs in which students are encouraged to look beyond lecture halls, labs, and textbooks. Technology offers opportunities to bring together people, tools, and data in a global commons . Creating a global commons requires more than removing barriers posed by subject matter, geography, economics, or age. It requires a new set of models that may challenge many of our historic assumptions about authority and education. This presentation explores principles and examples that hint at a future global commons .

Noontime Plenary, 2008 NMC Summer Conference, Princeton University
Wole Soboyejo, Princeton University

This keynote presentation gives an overview of new frontiers in nanotechnology. Starting from the origins of modern nanotechnology about 50 years ago, nanotechnology is shown to have the potential to impact almost every aspect of our daily lives. These range from technologies for the early detection and treatment of cancer, to the next generation of solar cells, television screens, and filters for water purification. In each of these cases, the underlying scientific ideas are presented as well as some of the challenges that must be overcome prior to future applications in the developing and developed worlds. The presentation concludes by exploring ways in which nanotechnology can be used to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers in the developed and developing worlds.
