This conference is very special as it marks the 15th anniversary of the New Media Consortium. Since its founding in 1993, the NMC’s mission has been to explore and promote innovative applications of technology to teaching, learning, and creative expression. Our history parallels the emergence of multimedia, the Internet, the world wide web, online video, Web 2.0, and now we are poised at the frontier of the 3D web. The NMC has been a part of all of these developments, and our member institutions have become well-recognized as innovative leaders in the creative application of technology to teaching, learning, and creative expression.

For fifteen years now, NMC members have been helping to invent and understand new forms of interaction, new approaches to learning, and new ways of communicating with an excitement and energy that has been palpable on campuses. Looking over the landscape that is the NMC today, a tremendous energy and excitement is still in the air as members continue to create new forms and new ideas that are transforming teaching, learning, and creative expression.

The 2008 NMC Summer Conference is a reflection of that energy. Working together with Princeton University, we have put together what I think is one of the most exciting and comprehensive programs to date. Two longtime friends of the NMC, Diana Oblinger, the recently appointed president of EDUCAUSE, and Henry Jenkins, the world-renowned authority on media convergence, will engage us from the podium with their latest thinking. Wole Soboyejo, a special guest keynoter, is on the Princeton faculty and will share his unique experiences with us at the Friday luncheon. Another guest speaker, Bill Frakes, an award winning photographer from Sports Illustrated, will also share his thoughts on the convergence of media.

We will again pause to honor member organizations with the Center of Excellence Award, the NMC’s highest honor, and recognition of extraordinary accomplishment in our field. And as always, we will get a rapid-fire snapshot of what members are doing at the renowned Five Minutes of Fame! Other special features like the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus and a wide range of special sessions and activities promise to make this year’s NMC Summer Conference truly memorable.

We hope you will take time to join me in thanking all the folks at our host institution, Princeton University, who have done so much to make this a fantastic conference for all of us. An event like this involves the hard work of many people who work behind the scenes to ensure we have a great program and experience for attendees. We are looking forward to an engaging and valuable time together!
