NMC Symposium on the Evolution of Communication

Dec 3 2007 - Dec 5 2007

The Symposium will explore the premise that technology has not only mediated communication in countless ways, but that the very ways we communicate—and even the ways we talk and think about communication—are changing as a result. It will be held at the NMC Conference Center in Second Life. Online registration opens Nov. 6.

2007 NMC Online Conference on the Convergence of Web Culture and Video

Mar 21 2007 - Mar 22 2007

Video as we know it, produced by experts and consumed by viewers, is metamorphosing into a different genre altogether, blurring the lines between producers and audiences. New video-based forms of self-expression are emerging, with notable examples like video mashups, jumpcuts, and video blogging.  Nonlinear narratives abound in this format, in which stories unfold across a series of 1 to 3-minute clips and web viewers are drawn into mysteries such as the story of Lonelygirl15.  Brand-new forms like machinima are emerging that bridge virtual worlds, gaming, and storytelling, all through the medium of the small video.

2005 NMC Online Conference on Visual Literacy

Apr 5 2005 - Apr 6 2005

The Online Conference on Visual Literacy explored the ways emerging ideas, constructs, tools, and theories are fueling new interest in visual communication. The program included sessions within the following tracks:

  • Exploring the Visual/Digital Literacy Landscape
  • Successful Projects & Real-Life Examples
  • Visual/Digital Literacy Trends and Issues

2004 NMC Online Conference on Social Computing

Nov 16 2004 - Nov 16 2004

Social computing is the application of technology as a mediator of social interaction and collaboration, and could have significant application for teaching and learning, especially at a distance. What makes Social Computing interesting as an approach is that these technology-enabled interactions are based on a set of intuitive strategies that foster high-quality and efficient communication. A variety of simple but easily accessible tools make these interactions possible over a wide variety of modalities. The result is more effective knowledge generation, knowledge sharing, collaboration, learning, and collective decision-making, and is especially applicable to distributed learning, research, and work settings.

The theme of the Online Conference on Social Computing will be the application of Social Computing constructs, tools, and theory to educational contexts, specifically within higher education.
