2007 NMC Online Conference on the Convergence of Web Culture and Video
March 21, 2007 - March 22, 2007
Video as we know it, produced by experts and consumed by viewers, is metamorphosing into a different genre altogether, blurring the lines between producers and audiences. New video-based forms of self-expression are emerging, with notable examples like video mashups, jumpcuts, and video blogging. Nonlinear narratives abound in this format, in which stories unfold across a series of 1 to 3-minute clips and web viewers are drawn into mysteries such as the story of Lonelygirl15. Brand-new forms like machinima are emerging that bridge virtual worlds, gaming, and storytelling, all through the medium of the small video.
The singular focus of this gathering is to consider how these developments are impacting our lives, and how they are affecting the ways we work, learn, collaborate, and even socialize. The conference is designed to spark an examination that explores both the positive and negative aspects of this phenomenon on learning, social interaction, self-expression, and more.
Keynoters Henry Jenkins, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Angela Thomas, University of Sydney, and Cynthia Calongne, Colorado Technical University, joined us for this 2-day examination of the convergence of web culture and video.

This groundbreaking meeting brought together museum and campus leaders, trustees, and educators for a series of dialogs with Pachyderm authors, developers, members of the open source community, students, museum experts, and the Marcus Foundation Board to discuss the outreach and programmatic use of Pachyderm in museums and institutions of higher education. While examples from many disciplines were featured, a special emphasis was placed this year on examples from the arts and arts education.

2006 NMC Regional Conference
November 8, 2006 - November 10, 2006
NMC Regional Conferences are one-of-a-kind events, each very much a reflection of the host institution. In fall 2006, the NMC came to Texas for a very special regional event that was held on the campus of Trinity University and hosted by the Center for Learning and Technology.
Befitting the rich traditions of Trinity and its sister institutions across the southwest, the conference brought together scholars & technologists from across the region to explore new ideas, discuss the issues which surround them, and share stories of successful efforts. Attendees stayed at an historic Spanish hotel located downtown on the famous River Walk, an area steeped in the traditions of Old San Antonio.

2006 NMC Online Conference on Digital Media
October 24, 2006 - October 26, 2006
This online conference was informed by the MacArthur Foundation Series on Digital Media and Learning, a two-year project in which the NMC is helping to explore the impact of digital media on our lives in a variety of ways, and encouraging dialog among experts, visionaries, and thought leaders from around the globe. This unique event expanded that dialog beyond the project and reached out to an international audience.
The conference was designed to extend the examination of this phenomenon now underway among leading writers and researchers in the MacArthur-sponsored project to a broader audience, and further explore both the positive and negative aspects of technology on learning, social interaction, self-expression, and more.
Keynoters Howard Rheingold, author of Smart Mobs, among many other books and articles, and danah boyd, noted researcher and speaker on social networking, were present for this 2-day examination of the impact of digital media on all aspects of our daily lives.

2006 NMC Online Conference on Personal Broadcasting
April 26, 2006 - April 27, 2006
At the leading edge of a wave that will last for the next several years and beyond, personal broadcasting, which uses informally produced personal audio and video content as a form of personal expression and as a means of information delivery, is rapidly expanding into academe as small, easy-to-use devices increasingly allow people to capture and share personal experiences, information, and events.
From podcasting to video blogging (vlogging), personal broadcasting has clearly begun to impact campuses and museum audiences significantly. With roots in text-based media (personal websites and blogs), personal broadcasting of audio and video material is a natural outgrowth of a popular trend made possible by increasingly more capable portable tools.
